What Have You Done To Your Van Today?

No, it was free standing, slid neatly and quite snugly between the wheel arches, but it did move backwards and forwards a bit. I always intended to utilise the additional seat belt mounts above the arches to fix it, but sometimes the flexibility of changing where it sat was useful.

Quite west, almost wet!

Washed it, it was minging! It’s looking better now. And I simultaneously drained the starter battery because I had the phone plugged in to the van for Apple Play to connect whilst I was waiting for a phone call, so the ignition was on too. I’ve borrowed a battery charger because I loaned mine to someone and I can’t remember who and whilst I’m having a less than perfect day my starter pack was flat so that’s charging too.

Fitted my ‘safari style’ awning from ‘Tent and Trail’ with the help of owner Chris. Awning is really low profile, really well engineered with some great features, and (I thought) very competitively priced. Super pleased and compliments the ARB Base Rack perfectly (in my eyes). Can wholeheartedly recommend ‘Tent and Trail’ if anyone is considering such an awning or a roof tent. Chris helps design and tweak his own product range and sources suppliers himself. Really great independent business, and super helpful. We used specific ARB Awning Brackets, but Chris does supply his own too.

Had it MOTed and serviced, thats the end of my all in plan and being over 6 years (2018) its not eligible for another one; time to find a decent Indie I guess.. Did I get my moneys worth? maybe, no breakdowns in that time but 2 warranty claims; 2 front and 1 rear egr pipes and two flushes, and some peace of mind I guess especially when driving on foreign trips.

Longest day = lots of time in the evening to muck about with the van  Couple of quick and easy mods, and a few hours detailing. Heaven.

First off, I’ve had my Ovano Switch XL unit fitted for about 18 months now, and it’s been great (honestly, anyone with a Kombi should look into one - best money I’ve spent on the van). But recently it’s started creaking like hell. So, quick gander on their website, and they now sell side supports to limit the sideways movement. Apparently these are now included as standard on any new units they sell/fit, but you can buy and retro fit ‘em yourself. Easy as pie to fit, and it’s completely sorted the problem  Like completely. Happy days.

Next up, I’ve always had a bit of a first world problem with my Leighton LV-1 alloys. Love the wheels, hate the centre caps they came with (weird green logo branding). Problem is, the caps are a weird size (68mm), and I’ve struggled to find decent quality replacements that’ll fit (I’ve previously bought and binned a couple of sets that weren’t up to scratch). Once again, this forum came up trumps though, and @click83 gave a solid recommendation for THESE (4 items VW 68mm / 62mm wheel center caps Volkswagen rim hub covers - TuningLinieTM) which fit perfectly and the quality is tip-top. They take about a week to come from Germany, but worth the wait. Fitting was simple, just drilled a small hole in the middle of the Leighton caps, hooked an Allen key in, and yanked ‘em out with a pair of pliers. Then just pushed the new ones in. Took less than 5 mins. Pics probably don’t do them justice, but much preferring the OEM+ look

As they came (forgot to take ‘before’ photos)…

Then, a ruddy good detail inside and out (quite happy with some nice reflections from the paint ). Bloody love long summer evenings…

Long shot but im hoping you can help me. The ovano side support instructions just mention the bolts. Did you install the captive nuts as well? Just drill a suitable sized hole at 90 degrees? Cheers

I ha
And that is why I always use an axle stand!! View attachment 277524Snapped while jacking up the rear of the van. Wheel was still on as I’m just doing a quick wheel change.
I have tried using the VW jack a couple of times, and just don't trust it at all :( I will be purchasing a bottle jack for changing flat tyres etc after seeing this post (I use a trolley jack and axle stands in the garage for everything else)

I never use the supplied jack as a stand alone support, but my bottle jack doesn't quite go high enough to get the wheel off so I use the van jack to get it high up then put an axle stand under. If I'm going to go under the van then I replace the van jack with a bottle jack as my second support device.
But the van jack just failed at the weld point as I jacked the van up. I'd already put the axle stand under anyway, but it wasn't an issue as the wheel was still on anyway.
