Wheel came off - what may be damaged?

If they had sheared off there would be some stubs left in the hub, from the photo it looks like there are just holes! A photo of the retrieved wheel bolts would confirm if they have sheared as there will be fresh damage and a shear is pretty obvious.

I think it’s more likely the bolts were not done up or insufficient bolt length which then just pulled straight out of the hubs when the wheel was under load.

You are correct but I don’t think the threads come flush with the mating face, I think the bolt goes through the disc which isn’t threaded, so you probably wouldn’t be able to see the broken bolts in the picture anyway.

I would be really interested to have a look at the bolts or some better photos of the hub area as we could be fairly sure about what actually happened from these.

Sorry to see this OP. From the pic, the yellow spigot ring doesn't look very deep. These carry the weight around the hub, not just the bolts. Have the right rings been used with the aftermarket wheels. I'd have expected at least one of the bolts to have sheared flush or even proud with the disc face. There are none on the photo. My money is on the bolts just not being tightened, and the wheel working them loose, especially if the spigot ring is the wrong size.

I hope you get it sorted, keep the thread updated.

This did happen to me once in about 1988, in an old Simca Matra Rancho....... The front corner dropped, and I saw the wheel overtake me...... That was due to someone forgetting to tighten the wheel bolts up after the thing had been in for welding... Luckily I was going slow too. I found a couple of bolts a few yards back. Pinched one from another wheel, and put it back on.... o_O

I think it's a case of finger installing bolts with just a few threads and forgetting to tighten them especially after such a short distance. I dont believe all 5 bolts sheared either though absolutely happy to be proved wrong if there are any pics

I would assume that whatever was done wrong on this wheel could have been done for the other three. I would therefore get all the hubs and fastenings checked to take into account the suggestions made by others who have responded to your post. In particular, I would assume that the bolts on all four wheels could have been over tightened and therefore the threads stretched making them more prone to become loose. As a minimum, bin the bolts from all the wheels and replace them with correct ones that are tightened to the correct torque.
