Which Base Van For Camper Conversion?

Thanks for the replies, guess the t30 makes more sense if I can find one...

Kev, did you have many passengers with you also?

Cheers

Aye was pulled in, think they were having a van day (At that point no rear side windows) as HGV were going past and only vans at the scales.
Mrs was with me but she was asked to jump out while I was put on scales. Since then I have added side windows and put the spare wheel back on, guess that would take me over T28. Good news for me that I have a T30

I'm new to the water cooled world, my T6 is the first water cooled vehicle I have had in the last 11 years. I'm used to having to take shed loads, even now I carry spares for air-cooled vans as see a fair few at the side of the roads up here. Be prepared and radical self reliance are how I like to roll :)

I have a T30 as well - when fully loaded with gear for a week, bikes and boat trailer I would be over the T28 limit. I had a VOSA guy give me a good look on the M6 last year but he chose to pull the guy who’d just overtaken me with a car on the back of his flatbed truck instead - I’d recently had stiffer springs put on the back - with the old ones and my saggy arse he would definitely of pulled me in.

I am still keen on the swamped look on my T28...upgrading the suspension will presumably increase load capacity as a side benefit.

Would I be correct in thinking there is a company who can “replate” if suspension is upgraded.

So we will soon be looking at purchasing and converting a T6 into a camper but not sure what base T6 to start with? Whats everyones recommendations, would a kombi be better than a panel van? T28, 30 or 32? Ideally would prefer a LWB but any disadvantages over the SWB?

Would purchase a van already converted but can't find the right base van spec I want or in the right price bracket so looks like buying a T6 then getting it converted. Will be going to busfest next month so hoping a number of converters will be there to check out?

Any help would be most appreciated

Cheers,
TR.

We went through a similar process a couple of years ago. We went over the top on both base van & conversion spec. The result is a van we love & do around 10,000 (holiday) miles a year in her. Bear in mind we use the van to tow & launch a boat, so some of the spec isn't as frivolous as it seems:-
t32 LWB Highline 204ps DSG 4motion c/w mechanical rear diff lock.
ACC, LEDs front & rear, discover media with premium wifi package (the wifi is a waste of money imo)
Full VB air suspension
Factory swivels, individual captains seats.
Auxiliary coolant heater
Side airbags
Hill descent control
Additional door seals
+ other stuff that I've lost track of.

Personally I prefer the extra space of the LWB, I have a SWB T5.1 that is my work van, & I always wished it was a LWB.

Re. Engine power, I've never heard anyone complain that their engine was overpowered & as far as I know Pendle don't do a remap to "reduce" engine power.

DSG, wouldn't be without it, same goes for the 4motion.

Busfest is a good call, visit the Dirty Weekender stand for a good poke around real vans owned by real people. Not just show stuff.

Cheers. The plan was 204 tdi with dsg. 4motion would be nice but not a deal breaker. Just a question of which base van to start with??

For me I went with a LWB T32 140 kombi and I made a Kombi camper.
And all units and seats are removable.
I love my van I would do the same conversion again but I would Defiantly Definitely Definitely add 4motion!!!
I camp all year in the van and in the winter on muddy fields I have been stuck a few times and I now carry Sand boards!

If you're going down the full conversion route, I'd go panel van personally. Otherwise you pay for stuff that you don't need with the Kombi. Are you buyin new or used?

Thanks those photos look great. Does that rear bench pull out to make a bed? Was thinking of something like that or a L shape sofa/bed.

Well if you're buying new, the world's your lobster & only constrained by the depth of your pockets. If you go down the used route, then you have to buy what's available rather than what you want, unless you're exceptionally lucky. You'll obviously get more for your buck buying used, as someone else has taken the hit, but you will probably have to compromise on spec.

Hi no it’s just as it is. Lots of stowage inside, one of my sons does use it as a bed and at a push I could.
I have slept on the floor between the kitchen pod and the bench on a roll Matt so it will sleep 4.
I do find with my layout and being LWB there is a fair bit of room for every one.
Front captain seat, second row of seats, and rear bench.
And the pop top has pleanty of room
