Which eBike?

Do Boardman do an e bike yet, you get Boardman thro Halfords. I bought a Halfords Boardman road bike back in 2009, still have it , has had a few new parts , but its a tremendous bike, has done thousands of miles including Lands End to John O Groats. Jeff

Yes, my wife has one. She loves it.

Absolutely !
As much fun uphill as down !
No quite the same suffering cardio workout going up , but just fun .
And the stuff they let you climb !!!

Apparently this used to be the case, but the newest motors don't drag. You could cycle ok on the flat without motorised assistance, but due to the extra weight of the bike, you wouldn't want to take on an incline.

i ride my haibike when out with the family without any assist and it’s fine - given it’s heavier and the family are generally slower it feels like a little bit more of a workout

agree with teamfly above - the stuff you can get up/climb turns average riders super human ha

I'm not sure about super human. A couple of years ago I was in Majorca riding up Sa Calorbra, felling like I was going well. Even going past e-bikes. A group of skinny fellas went past me like I wasn't even trying. When I looked back over Strava, I found them on my flybys and they had got up there 6 minutes faster than me. They looked bloody quick, but actually they were still some 10 minutes down on what the pro riders had recorded. Whatever level we feel we are at, compared to the elite, we are all shit.

If you've already got a bike you like and don't mind tinkering and investing in a few tools, you can always build your own.

This is my Giant Talon MTB with a Bafang mid drive 17ah battery(£760 from Woosh)
And my Boardman MX Comp with a Yose rear hub drive with12ah battery (£360 eBay)IMG_20210203_144008.jpgIMG_20210128_135059.jpgIMG_20210205_140518~2.jpg

I had a Boardman ebike but took it back as wasn't impressed with the quality for the price.

Loving the Fanta cage! I see the Bafang motors go up to 160Nm! You can shift a lot with that (although you'd chew through batteries pretty fast I guess!).

But those elite aren’t sitting down with a steak and a beer at the end of the day. They’re weighing out their protein shake.
Doing your best to put a grin on your face is the best way forward.

I think it's a lot more versatile @Magnus - you can import routes from Komoot (and possibly other apps too) onto the Nyon which include all sorts of off-road bike routes and trails. You can also do this on the Kiox but this has to be linked by bluetooth to your phone and only gives turn by turn guidance rather than full maps, whereas the Nyon has inbuilt GPS and map displays.

I've got an app on my phone which gives bridleways etc (Visorando) which is free but seems to be aimed more towards walking routes. It offers search options for lots of activities (mountain bike/skiing/horse/snowshoes/canoe & kayak/hybrid bike and road bike) but choose anything other than walk and it doesn't offer anything. How much does the OS service cost - and does it offer route planning like Komoot?

Yes, you can plan routes on it. It's called Outdoors GPS, regional maps are about a tenner but I got whole of UK on an offer for £20. It is an OS 1:50,000 "Landranger" map which you follow, showing you and the direction you're facing. I use my eMTB more for orienteering by bike so it's perfect for my use. I don't bother planning a route normally, just look at the bridleways and other row on Streetmap (OS again) on the computer, get an idea of where I want to start and roughly which area I want to explore and off I go.
I wouldn't be much use for road cycling.

Thanks - I'll compare this to Komoot. Like you, I'm more likely to use it for 'which way now' rather than planning a whole pre-determined route.

I have Komoot but the "terrain" maps don't give me the RoW information I want..

I have Outdoors GPS, I pay £20 per year and it gives you access to all the maps of the UK. very handy when out exploring and if you want to record your walk and so on.

I use the same, not for recording but just for access to OS Maps for the whole of the UK.

This is my Cube Stereo 160, with a few mods... Renthal bars/ stem combo and Burgtec pedals.
Oh and a volspeed 3 chip too :)

How do you like the Volspeed? I'm tempted to put one straight on mine when it arrives, although that will obviously affect the warranty. A bit like getting the T6 mapped!!

Wondered this myself although I’ve a Shimano motor so looking at Speedbox. The 15mph cut outs a PITA at times.

Good analogy :)
It’s a game changer I think. Super easy to install. I’ve set the ‘assistance’ to cut out at 45kmh, but you can set it to whatever you like up to 70kmh I think.
I would recommend going for it without hesitation.
Next job is a way to transport in the van without taking the front wheel out to mount through the axle, also not touch the kitchen units or side panels and without the use of tie down straps either!!

Deaks :)

Can you pedal fast enough to maintain 70kmh with MTB gearing?

What does the Volspeed chip do to your battery range?
