Which Jump Starter?

@Dellmassive Good video. At the end, was that your puzzled face or peed off face?
lol . . .

i was Genuinely surprised it didn't work.

the jump pack dumped all its power into the flat battery . . . . and that was that. - dead flat also. ( so we had a flat car battery and a flat jump pack !! )

reading the marketing bumf it should have worked - but real life, cold winter, cold thick oil, battered old Vaux Astra with a lazy starter and iffy glow plugs = no joy.

so i kept it as a USB power bank for a while - then sold it.

++++++++++

as for my mates car - i had the GB150 in the van anyway - that started it 1st turn of the key.

the GB70 & GB150 have been faultless,

(apart from when i cooked the GB150 in 50degC summer heat - but that's mentioned earlier in this thread and was replaced by NOCO out of warranty at cost - so that's fine as it wasn't a unit failure, just my own stupidity )

while were on topic . . .

i thought id dig the GB150 out the van - for a recharge.

I've not had it out since summer.

this is the current jump pack collection:

GB70
GB150
GBX75

GB150, its showing 75% SOC - not bad for being in storage for 6mnths.

we might as well do a size comparison while we`re here:

im keeping my eyes out for a GBX155 . . . . .

and might sell on the GB70

.

@Dellmassive ........simple explanation, simply put! I get it now.......told you I know nothing about vehicle electrics. I'd ask my son but he knows nothing about them either and he's a sparky.......living in Darwin, Australia!! I'll keep my eye open for a GBX75. I might be asking advice about coding in batteries next..........at 6.5 years old, I'm living on borrowed time so I sense a purchase on the horizon. Many thanks to all the contributors and a happy new year to all.:thumbsup:

So which one is best, still none the wiser, and whats it all about that you cant put it on the battery poles and need to earth it on the engine ...WHY...please help as I really want one of these but dont know what to buy.

@Jimmmmy .........I was as confused but, it would appear that you can just go directly onto the poles with the noco........indeed, it seems you can with jump leads too. I think it's when you're charging or anything prolonged that you have to go + to + and then - to earth point (for jump starting, I think my owners manual suggests earth point to earth point where start stop batteries are involved?). I want to get this right in my own mind because the thought of burning out some components is horrific cost and inconvenience wise!!

Thanks, still not 100% but 95% is good..lol, It seems that reading info here makes you wonder how to jump start your van, not like the old days is it, couple of leads and a good battery/engine running from another car would do the job, perhaps I will just leave the solar battery conditioner on 24/7 and hope for the best.

Just ordered the NOCO Boost X GBX75 2500A after looking at U tube reviews....nobody can seem to fault it so thanks for the recommendations and I hope it may get me and anyone near me out of trouble in the future, Happy New Year to you all :)

Happy New year too @Jimmmmy sure you won't be disappointed. Just mind make sure you have a decent charge in it. Doesn't take long to charge via rapid cigarette lighter connection!

I, like @Jimmmmy , have been lurking on this thread for a long time and finally cashed in all the Halfords gift cards my family got me for xmas (Amazon won't deliver these to NI!!!) and bought a NOCO!

I know @mopardave said that you can go ahead and jump using the terminals rather than needing one earthing point....I'm quite happy finding a satisfactory earthing point (and I don't doubt you dave :) ) but the booster lives in the van and is to get my wife out of bother if she ever needs it and I'm not sure if she'd be able to do that....reds and blacks would be more straight forward...

Is there any chance a bunch of you could confirm that it would be ok to go straight to the battery terminals in times of need...?

I'm particularly asking this due to the start/ stop nature of our 2017 204 DSG T32.....

Thanks in advance!

No, @Sparkyis .....not guilty! I wish I knew enough to be able to give guidance on this matter!! I'm actually reluctant to go terminal to terminal. I was looking for advice because frying my electrics is not part of the plan. According to those on here who've forgotten more than I'll ever know, it would appear to be okay to do that. The vw handbook gives different guidance.

As @Pete C says,

terminal to terminal is the correct way to use these noco jump packs.

It's only for long-term charging off the mains that a separate earth point is needed.

Details above.

I'm trying to get my head around in van electrics but dont understand the need for a jump starter!!!. I'm assuming the starter battery goes flat quite often then? Do you need one with a leisure battery set up??? I wasn't looking to get one, but do I need one.???
