Which Jump Starter?

I'm trying to get my head around in van electrics but dont understand the need for a jump starter!!!. I'm assuming the starter battery goes flat quite often then? Do you need one with a leisure battery set up??? I wasn't looking to get one, but do I need one.???

The starter battery shouldn't go flat unless you leave something switched on for a long time while the engine isn't running or there's an electrical fault. Or the battery is knackered.
A T6 is fundamentally no different to any other vehicle (unless it's been converted to be a camper), so it's no more likely to suffer a flat battery than any other car or van.

It’s just another tool in the travelling tool kit. Some of our van holidays have been in quite remote parts of Europe, so we need to be a bit more self sufficient (still have breakdown cover though). So the ability to start the van if the battery is a little flat is useful.
Having said that, I have only ever used it on my wife’s car and a variety of neighbours vehicles !

@JDC

If you drive the van daily - no.

If the van is layed up for 3 or 4 weeks or longer - yes, possibly.

If you go off grid camping without a leisure battery - yes, most likely.

If you go camping with a leisure battery - possibly

If your happy to wait for the rac or AA when you have flat battery - no

If you want to be self sufficient and jump start you own van straight away if ever needed - yes

Cheers for the replies. I don't think I'll bother as at the moment it may well be hook up only, the rest will be battery powered so probably be charged on the move.

It’s the normal story, you don’t need it until you leave it at home.
I bought a secondhand GB70, very cheap and never used in anger. Not sure the new price is worth it, better changing the starter battery if you are worried about the condition and be careful not to drain it.

What most people don't realise is that when camping on EHU the starter battery isn't charged.

So every time the door is opened the starter will be draining down.

(Unless you have a separate smart charger connected to an the starter)

I see it all the time on campsites..... Been on hookup all week, but have a flat starter.

@Pete C and @Dellmassive thanks so much for the replies! I’m now much more confident about just going pole- to- pole for a jump start if needed. Now I just need to figure out how to describe the process to the wife over the phone if she ever needs it because I KNOW she’s not interested!!! :slow rofl:

@Sparkyis we could perhaps do a joint training session :) ! If battery every less than 3A then need to initiate override function! It's easy but can be concerning if not starting initially. Perhaps I just won't show wife how to use.....

I’ve just jumped on the Amazon deal, cheers for the heads up.
Brought it because our van has not been fully converted yet, slow process.. we have a diesel heater fitted but no leisure battery yet. I know the heater should shut down if the starter battery falls below a certain voltage, but don’t want to take any chances in some remote and cold location, also it’s a handy usb power pack.
And as mentioned above, it’s a simple way to jump start modern vehicles, the standard jump leads can get in a tangle and be attached to things they shouldn’t, they make me nervous.

I carry one at all times and have used it several times over the last few years on my own and others motors, it lives in my work (transit) van day to day and goes in the transporter if it ever leaves town, i have had a flat battery when camping before just from a few days of getting in and out of van without running engine and as its DSG theres no bump starting it so defo saved me on more than one occasion !!

I'm thinking it will fit in the GB150 case....?

They look the same size.

I'll get the 150 out the van tomoz for a measure up.

Gee @mopardave that got I worried;
I’ll be 67 next week…
Yes, I missed the decimal point.
But then, especially at my age, I often miss the point….
Andy
Ha ha Andy.......I didn't word that very well did I! I'm showing my age........and allas, it ain't 6.5!!:cry:
