Which Jump Starter?

I need two. One for van and one for car.

Currently I now have three. (All the others have been sold)

I'll possibly sell on the GB70 now I have the GBX75.

@DanTK thanks for grabbing the pic :mexican wave:

@DanTK ended up with a Flat battery. . . . so he called out VWCV assist.

they arrived in 10mins - wow!!

and jump started his van with - - - - - guess what?

yep a NOCO GB70 !!

and he also recommended a GB70 upwards. . . . . so i wonder if he has been following this thread? - or if he just come to that conclusion himself?

thanks to @DanTK and @Ayjay for highlighting the storage time of the jump pack:

The NOCO jump packs will hold there charge all year ( 70% after 12mnths) . ( lithium Lifepo4 cell tech )

but its recommended to fully charge every 5-6 MONTHS.

My wife left the interior lights on inside mine whilst we were away for the weekend a few weeks ago (possibly the coldest yet?). Came back on the Monday.......flat battery. Jumped it off her mini......still not 100% sure about earth points etc (I clamped to engine block on mine). It's behaved itself for the last couple of weeks but I suspect I may be living on borrowed time as it's 6.5 years old now. I'm thinking GBX55, which should in theory at least, be more than man enough to start a t6 diesel........but @Dellmassive has got me thinking? There's quite a jump (no pun intended) between the 55 and the 75. Other thing is, they seem to be quite fickle.......possibly a bit unreliable??? Seeing as there doesn't seem to be an "industry Standard" way of jumping a start/ stop from another start/stop, it seems safer/simpler to just be able to bang one of these directly on to the positive and negative battery terminals?Any thoughts anyone? Hope you've all had a peaceful Christmas.....still can't get used to not having to work either Christmas or New Year!

What @Loz .......on both vehicles? @DXX .........is this the stud under the scuttle just above and to the left of the battery? I've seen it mentioned but never seen it......must take a look??? Appreciate the guidance here gents........vehicle electrics and the potential for something expensive to occur makes me really wary!!

It attaches to the engine mount bracket, just to the right of the timing belt cover.
The earthing strap for the engine.

As above.

It's best to use jump packs direct across the battery if it's accessible.

Or the OEM jump points under the bonnet if the battery is romote and hidden.

For longer term charging ( with a mains charger etc ) on most modern cars and vans you should use a body ground and not the battery NEG post

...

I'd go with the gbx75 over the gbx55.

The gb50 was a spec bumped GB40 that was under powered.

The gbx range just moved to 4cells from 3cells and adds fast charger...

Hence why I recommend the gbx75

I was thinking of picking up a GB70 on Thursday but I'm now thinking that a GBX75 might be worth the extra £50 - a quick google turned up this comparison (but I've not watched the videos):

@Ayjay. I've got a GB70 and a friend has got a GBX75. Neither of have used them as anything other than a standby jump starter - mine in my T6 and his in an older 3L Mercedes G Wagon but I can testify that they do both start either very easily. Neither of us use them for anything other than jumpstarting and mine has only been used 4 times anyway (but it did start my van on one occasion after sitting uncharged for 8 months without charging - I don't know about the other one though). Only you can say whether the extra power offered by the GBX75 is worth £50 but I guess it would depend on whether it would double as a power bank or not. From my reading on here, @Dellmassive seems to be the main man on this stuff and might well add further comment.

@Bluesman. That's useful and thanks. I suspect I would use whatever I bought as a power bank as well and think I'll buy the GBX75. As to @Dellmassive, I think he already has commented unless he wants to add to it.

i have both now (GB70 & GBX75) . . . and looking at getting the GBX155 to upgrade my GB150.

the GBX USB fast charge is a nice addition.

the GBX 4cell vs 3cell as a good upgrade.

they added the 60sec timer.

but im sad they have ditched the 12v output from the GB range.

so my take is that they newer GBX range is a welcome improvement.

but id still say the GBX75 is the min size for a T6 and wouldn't bother with a GBX55 regardless of what the spec say.

you need to remember that internal charge capacity is the important thing here, as soon as you connect the packs to the battery it will start loosing charge into the flat battery. ( which is a larger capacity than the jump pack . . . . so could swallow the whole pack dead - that's why they've added the 60sec timer)

then when you switch on the ignition you loose charge into the glow plugs and modules etc etc . . .

if you don't get the van started straight away you will dump the whole jump pack into the battery and van leaving you with nothing left for additional restart attempts.

++++++++++++++

the GBX75 has almost twice the capacity of the GBX55 !!!!!!!

@Dellmassive. Cheers for additional comment. I think I’ve made my mind up to get the GBX75 but I think the £216 price above must have been exclusive to you as I clicked on the link and it was back up to £259. I note What you say about the charge being dumped staight into the car battery so assume that the listing on Amazon (and others) for the GB70 which says:

Features:

  • Compact, yet powerful lithium jump starter rated at 2,000 amps up to 40 jump starts on a single charge.
is just advertising speak (ie, b***ocks)

@Ayjay I reckon if you put in basket then don't go to checkout. Take out look at a few times it will end up with a limited offer deal. They have gone up in price. Def worth getting the case as well. Don't need additional leads as they all come with it. Mine does run out after a few 'hard starts' so I'd go with what @Dellmassive says above!
