Winter Tyres?

Not Alaska no, but venturing to ski resorts in the Cairngorms from time to time and previous traction issues on summer tyres just getting out my street when it has snowed, has prompted me to give these a go this year.

Tyre Maxxis Vansmart Snow WL2 215/60 R17 109/107H 8PR - Tyre Leader

Unless your into cycling, Maxxis is little known in this country. Much bigger in Asia, USA and the continent. I know the ratings are not the whole story, but A rated for wet weather grip and C rated for economy. Will let you know how I get on with them. I think Tyreleader are based in Luxemburg, however they were 20 quid a tyre cheaper than other suppliers and delivered in 3 days.

Just a wee word on my experience with winter tyres. And it is just that, only personal experience and by no means scientific here. When its cold, wet or on snow, winter tyres do make a huge difference to grip and traction. However, on winter days when temperatures are warmer and driving has been, well lets say progressive, I've found when they do reach their limit, winters are much more abrupt in how they let go than summer tyres from the same brand. Blinking DSC / ESP lights and a requirement for a mit full of opposite lock sometimes occured when not really expected.

Im sure 99.99% of the time, we dont get close to the limit of a tyre but like most things vehicle related, tyres meet many compromises. Winter tyres are great for the purpose they are designed for. Perhaps less so in more favourable weather conditions. Once again, just my own thoughts on winters and shared in hopefully promoting everyone's safety, but maybe worth keeping enthusiasm on the open road pegged back a notch or two if your running winter boots.

Thanks for the advise,
Real good take on things, and the 109 rating was just what the van came with but seems to be awkward fro replacemtn all weather selection. But knowing I can go for 103/4 then that opens my selection and cost right up, so thanks for that... any input on All weather boots?

Yep, my choice is the Nokian weatherproof suv 235/60/17. Absolutely brilliant have done 20k miles so far, and it looks like there is another 15-20k miles left yet. Use it all year, amazing in the rain/aquaplaning (the most dangerous summer driving conditions); and like wise in winter; plus the advantage of having good Mud properties. My size is slightly oversized, but it looks better imo; and a bit more side wall rubber only helps with pot holes.

Tyremen in Hull do complete wheels and tyre packages delivered ready to go on.
I've had a few sets from them in past.

Its about this time of year they put their winter wheel sets online..

Can anyone recommend a good tyre for this time of the year to fit onto my 275/40/20?

I am bamboozled by the choice so recommendations would be ideal.

thanks

Ryan

I have just been out in the snow with my Nokian Weatherproofs for the first time and I'm really pleased, very good traction and control, they are from Finland, so I guess they will know a bit about tyres for these conditions. My tyres are on 17" steel wheels, not sure if you can get them in 20" sizes and load rated?
I'm getting the van ready for our annual trip to Scotland next weekend, so I'm glad to have some decent rubber on for winter, my T4 had BFG all-terrains on and that was brilliant in snow.

I’ve got a set of 4 20” alloys with Pirelli winter tyres on all ok temread if anyone is interested?

I'm 100% all-season; all-weather tyres for UK driving. Better in every regard than swapping winter/summer over for a typical T6 use.

Went with your advise regarding the Nokians Chris, I've been all over Yorkshire in some terrible conditions in my 150 DSG 2wd over the last couple of days, Couldn't be happier with them...totally transformed the usability, driven around loads of people who were sliding about and stuck! Good shout!_DSC1399.jpg

A set of Nokians will be going only Devonports this coming Autumn.
My wife's 520D touring has winter wheel & tyres and the performance in poor conditions is amazing - have to keep reminding myself that the conditions are poor and not to drive 'normally'.

Really pleased you like them. We have 25k miles on ours Vel now, we are doing many more miles than I thought (it is so nice to drive, we choose to use it over the car for most journeys....:))
I think on current form we will get upto 40k miles out of them if we change at 3mm tread depth
I spent all day ferrying staff around in ours today, it is brilliant in the snow without a doubt, even been pulling cars out. Snow isn't that deep at our house, but within 1 mile ditches have been completely filled with blown snow, running adjacent to roads, and yes there are now cars in the ditches; 12" of snow on many roads with some "A"roads closed.
Got a busy night picking up and dropping off.
I must say yours does look pretty with a layer of snow on it.

Is that a T32 on standard suspension. If it is then the extra 12mm on the side profile does a nice job of filling the arches.

@Mojo . Yip. Have to agree. That's a great looking setup. And sensibly practical too, if you don't mind me saying.
