Winter Tyres?

Hi Chris, quick one, do you foresee any issues with lowering 30mm (got a quote from local dealer to do this and keep warranty) and using the 25mm H&R spacers, on 215/60/17 tyres? I will eventually get the 235 Nokians when I need to replace the current Conti's...
30mm lowering will be absolutly fine with the 235/60/17; Mine is 20mm lowered and there is still plenty of room.
I think (maybe) you could go 50mm lowered and still be OK, but personally thats not for me.

Thanks Chris. I'm currently waiting in the dealers whilst the van is being fitted with 30mm springs! I asked them about tyre width, as I had some varied results after searching if 235 width tyres would be ok on my current 7j Devonports. They said that might not be best... However it seems like they might be ok? Find rims for your tyres 235/60 R17 » Oponeo.co.uk

Whats your opinion on it? Tried searching on here, but nothing popping up. What width are your alloys?

100% fine, in fact VW fit 235's to Devonports. My Vel came with Devonports and 235/55/17 tyres standard from VW; There is lots of conflicting info out there, but the tyre manufactures are fine with 7" wheels for our size of tyre.
Sometimes when you look at ultra low performance tyres you get a different storey so say a 235/35/17 may need a slightly wider rim, because there is less sidewall depth to accommodate lateral width differences.
Personally I think the slightly narrower rim is better from a kerbing protection perspective.:thumbsup:

Likewise, I'm running 235's on 17" Devonports. They were the standard size when I ordered mine, but it arrived with 215s on. I've since changed them, winter and summer to 235s.

Thanks for the information. I just called the local tyre fitters who Black Circles suggest fit the sourced 235/60/17 Nokians, and they have said they wouldn't recommend 235 tyre on a 7j wheel... Gave them the full spec of van etc. Interesting there is a bit of grey area around this.

I had my T30 fitted with Michelin Lattitude Cross tyres last year, a mild All Terrain M&S tyre rather than a Winter tyre but they were absolutely fantastic in the snow and ice this winter, seem to be wearing well and actually rated at 1 db quieter than the Bridgestone Road tyres I had fitted previously.

I fitted them because I spent a lot of time getting stuck in muddy fields at bike races!

and no it's not a 4 Motion

here's a screen grab from VW's own site...Screen Shot 2016-10-05 at 20.03.52.png

Well. That about sums it up @Mojo. Thanks.

Forgive my naivety, but a 235/60/17 tyre would be fine also? As opposed to a 235/55/17...

Yes no problem, that's what I have, don't forget that the 60 is a percentage of the tyre width not a measurement so the height of the sidewall is only 5% different in height.
I have 40mm H&R springs on with no issues.

I don't think there is any grey area; just most tyre fitters haven't got a clue about tyres.
Shame really but that has been my experience without exception.....I always listen to trade experienced people, but really believe them until I've done my own research. Life of hard knocks;)

Back to the OP. Has anyone here with winters fitted got stuck this winter? And, also did you keep going whilst others around you failed to do so?

It's a 3% incline of about 200 yards to get out my street to the main road. One morning we had 10 to 12 inches of snow covering the road. My wife's Juke and neighbours Volvo XC60 AWD both failed to make any progress. It took a few runs to plough tracks, but each time my winters managed to plough another 20 metres or so to get out the street. Once I got to the main road, there was a chap there with a Vivaro. His van had the summer Continentals tyres that I also use in summer. His van wouldn't move through the snow on the flat. A number of us had to push him out. Jumped back in my van, only for it to pull away on the raising gradient.

I've also managed to leave our station car park where others got stuck and climb a 400 yard 10% gradient with snow and ice with no issue.

Spend sometime abroad, in climates where snow and ice is the norm and life just seems to go on as normal, when all the vehicles on the road are equipped with winter tyres.

I spend a fair bit of time in Finland and Sweden and part of the reason life goes on as normal is that the vehicles all have not just winter tyres but snow tyres, it's amazing the difference having the studs makes, it's a shame they're not legal here

@chriscroft Bit of an update... Finally got the Nokians on! Very pleased with the look. I've got about 5/6mm left on the original Goodyear Cargo Vectors. The guys at the tyre shop suggested I keep them and use in the summer, as they reckon the Nokians wont do too well in the summer. "They'll get ripped up when it's warmer".

@chriscroft How have you found yours after a long term review, still going strong and using them all year round?

The bloke also mentioned road noise would be worse from the Nokians compared to the Goodyears. Even though they are rated better for decibels online...

I've run mine all year round (about 30months) and will get 40K+ miles with 3mm still left; so I don't think anybody could reasonably ask more than that, so they are absolutely fine in summer (UK). We haven't taken the van over-seas so if we had been in spain for 4 months over summer, I would have no idea how they would last. So UK, 100% all year round; and we drive our 204BiTDI reasonably hard. We are 4-motion so how that effects things I don't know; perhaps as a fwd the fronts would have gone earlier, but with rotation I think a fwd could still do 40k+.
When I've run tyres with Mud & Snow or All-Terrain tread tyres previously, they have become noisy well before they had worn out. But not the Nokians, mine are still whisper quiet at 34k miles (now) as they were on day 1; and to be honest I haven't rotated mine(front/back;os/ns) like you should do. So no just as quiet as summer tyres in my experiance.

Wonderful news. Thanks for the fast reply! Maybe I won't keep the Cargo Vectors after all...
