- 204ps Bi-Turbo CXEB T6 Engine & Turbo problems -

Mine is three years and a few days old and has done only 3000 miles, all confirmed.

3000 miles in first 3 years could be correct but may be not. I had a caddy I bought 2 years old years ago milage showed 25k obvs no mot certs as was under 3 years old done my due diligence in checks etc but came back clean. 6 months later took it to main dealer for some work when I had a phone call later in the day to tell me that it had been into a dealer 6 months prior to me buying it for some warranty work showing 45k so had been clocked. So basic moral to the story is you can’t always go by mot certs as it could do 100k in first few years then get tampered with before its first mot.
I’d ring vw and ask if it’s had any warranty work and what milage it had.
Saying all that it is rare and the van ended up being one of the most reliable vans I ever had never let me down in 10 years of ownership
Yeah I definitely tend to ere on the said of skepticism when it comes to ‘too good to be true’ type of things and this definitely falls in the bracket for me

Not that it necessarily makes a difference but this sale is from a company instead of private sale which does give me a ‘tad’ more confidence in its authenticity. That being said I’ve heard of plenty of sleezebag companies out there…

As said above mine was a rare case and did have service history from main dealer Cardiff which I later found out was also fraudulent due to his mate working there!! Just putting it out there it does happen

It’s a shame we can’t see better analytics of a vehicle when we buy them second hand... say hours run and number of journeys made as well as mileage. Must be in the ECU somewhere and no doubt some clever person could extract that and present the findings in an easy to understand format, for a fee of course (like the other tests and checks one can purchase)?
No ICE vehicle does well with short journeys. But modern diesels get a lot of problems if they idle for long periods. Some commercial vehicles - like the pick ups we are putting at roadwork signs and comes, are idling for hours on end - merrily filling their DPF with soot. Campers who run the engine to charge batteries or keep warm are also going to suffer.

You can if you have a hacked ODIS

It’s probably been clocked back. I will definitely check the MOT’s and the Vin number to make sure it’s not stolen.
Not sure if it necessarily helps but in the advert it states that it has 7500 miles warranted. Not clear if it’s their own warranty or whether it would be a VW one? Would mean there’s a 15,000 mile warranty that was put in place, is that a usual thing?

Apologies if any of these are stupid questions. Never owned a transporter or VW for that matter

Say everything checks out with the vehicle, mileage is true and all looks good, is it still worth taking the risk of getting this engine despite such a low mileage or do we think my money might be safer in a more reliable engine??

Thanks for the help everyone!

Well, I’ve spent my hard earned cash buying this engine after looking for a long time as I didn’t like the other engine with its problems but I have a friend that works directly for VW as a technical trainer and he said that the engine is different and the EGR was fixed with the other issues.

Not saying he’s gonna have issues down the line like all engines, but it’s the last of the batch.

It’s also quick. I have a DSG but front wheel drive if you’re getting all wheel drive launch control will be even better with yours than mine.

I’ve had the
Euro 5 140 six speed manual
Euro 6 150 six speed manual
And now the later 204 dsg sportline

There all great engines the 140 is meant to be most reliable as no ad-blue nonsense
My 150 was great no problems and now I love the 204 dsg it does have a lot of grunt and I don’t mooch about in it diesels are meant to be driven hard and long distance but saying that I ran my 150 locally short distance driving with the occasional long run for years with no issues.
It does seem to be the early bi-turbos that suffered but I bet there’s thousands that have been great! at the end of the day you pays your money and hope for the best

Do you find that the 204 uses a lot more diesel than the 150 I find it’s nowhere near as fuel efficient. I find you really have to be careful driving the 204 to get any decent fuel out of it.

If I’m honest there’s not much difference the 150 was thirsty but like I said done a lot of short distance. I’m not one to get to hung up on mpg I’m a petrol head at heart and my golf r is thirsty. Fill em up and enjoy

I drive a lot for work and around town 30mpg is lucky 60 on motorcycles which is good

Yes that is good better than me dash says average 28

I used to get around 320-350 miles on a 70 litre tank

The 140 was great on fuel plus bigger tank.
When the 150 was doing a regen you used to see the fuel gauge needle actually moving it drank it.

Extended warranty is no option in DK.
Until 5th year/110000km I had a quite attractive service agreement on everything except glass and tires. Sadly long gone now.

As stated previously I am looking at the TPI 2061290/6
I have now received response on the kulance claim from VW/dealer.

Offer as follows ("translated" original DK pricing incl 25% vat to GBP)

Overall all parts regarding the TPI has a 80% discount. (Added the cambelt kit, now we are at it, that only discounted 25%)
Work by the dealer has a 25% discount. ( the lower discount here will be an item for discussion :) )

In total we are looking at ~6.660 £ bill.
Breakdown (in slightly rounded numbers for simplicity).
- Oil weighing procedure 115 £
- Work regarding the TPI 2500 £ (25% discount)
- Parts regarding the TPI 3800 £ (80% discount)
- Cambelt kit 270 £ (25% discount)

If somebody is able to "decrypt" this line "GFS/GUIDET FUNKTION" see several times in the "offer". I´m very curious.

As mentioned I might try to challenge only 25% discount on labor but besides that it seems like my dealer has done a decent job with VW.
Did run it by legal advisor which says that considering this is VW it could be far worse.
:)

Regards Peter

For anyone interested in my progress I managed to negotiate 50% discount on the work instead of original offers 25%.
Saves me around £ 1000 in rounded numbers.

Decided to go ahead and the work will be done sometime during January 2025.

Still a huge chunk of money, which shouldn't be mine to pay, but a documented new engine etc. will affect the vans value positively.
Whether or not it will fully cover what I spend is uncertain but am looking forward to a fully fixed fresh van.

Wishing everyone a great weekend..
/Peter

I would always try and stick with a VW warranty rather than a aftermarket as it’s normally quicker when claiming third parties normally need someone to come out and check the work and it normally takes quite a long time to sort out
