- 204ps Bi-Turbo CXEB T6 Engine & Turbo problems -

I hate to post stuff because I always feel like I’m tempting fate, but I’m 1750 miles into our road trip and I checked the oil yesterday as I’ve brought a litre in case of top up.
Anyway, still on the full marker as it was when I left home over 2 weeks ago.
Just tippedIMG_7753.jpeg over the 140,000 mile mark a couple of days ago.

I'm about to embark on a oil consumption test tomorrow. We've owned our van for 2.5 years and had the all in warranty since owning. We have done 93,000 miles so far.

The issues started 3 weeks ago when I've been doing more miles to the lake district and back to see family when the turbo went on the journey up. I got to the destination but got it trucked back due to expected turbo failure (it was - the small turbo shaft sheered). They've since replaced the turbo but on the same journey last week it's averaged about 7mpg less and used 0.5-1l oil within 500 miles.

I spoke with the master tech today and he said the next step is to do a proper oil consumption test now they've ruled out an oil leak through using a dye in the oil. At this stage I'm hoping it does the same as it did last week and uses the same amount of oil so they see the issue. I'll post an iodine next week as I'm expecting to do the 600 miles by early next week.

I have all in warranty until June so I'm hoping it gets sorted over the next few months.

An update on this as I've just heard back from VW and it's using 0.3l per 1000km. Clearly this isn't great but is "within tolerance". This has only started over the past year or so - and this is with a brand new turbo so it isn't that. Oil leaks were also ruled out.

Has anyone got any advice for challenging this? My warranty lasts until the 18th June - so I only have 3.5 months. Clearly from what we all know this is on the way to an engine replacement.

the vw guidelines are very strict, and the dealerships have to stick to the manual.

if its under the threshold then they cant claim against the VW TPI. . . simple as that.

so you book the van in again in three months for another oil loss test.?

you could also pay for a diagnostic and get a compression test done on the cylinders. - that will show if its down on compression and bore wear.?

aside from that, you can keep driving and hope your one of the lucky ones.

....

Is it a CXEB engine?
Did the Flashing Coil light clear itself after switching off engine then restarting?
Does it keep coming back on?
I'm no expert compared to others on this forum but mine did this last week (CXEB 204hp) and I had the same code (Passive/Sporadic P22D300) and Passive/Sporadic P012100 Throttle/Pedal Pos. Sensor A Circ Range/Performance. Mine has not come back on, so am holding my breath. Others will be able to correct me here but it could just be an N75 valve playing up, which is not expensive to replace at all. Don't panic just yet! :)
Fingers crossed for you and me!

I would check vacuum piping to/from the solenoids N75 and N529.
both checked, N75 changed still no luck, Garage contacted TPS about actuators and was told by TPS, they dont sell them separately, and quoted me for a whole turbo unit with new actuators, Are they available seperately? Does anyone have any part numbers for them?

Thanks for the reply - I was just checking I'm not missing anything obvious. I think I will put more miles on and monitor closely and rebook early June if it does. I've also asked for an extended warranty quote and getting confirmation this would be covered under the event of it failing after that date.

Yes, VW are very strict and everything below 0,5L/1000km is (even in the manual) within spec. Absurd.
As Dellmassive writes above.wait awhile and ask for an oil weighing again.
This time make you are doing only long drives during the ~1000km test phase.
That was the way I finally managed to document the excessive oil use of TPI 2061290/6.

Best of luck

Recap: Coil Light flashing: Codes read by Carista: P22D300, P22D500

Update:
Got van back from VW yesterday. Complete new Bi-Turbo system fitted, this includes many pipes hoses etc, etc. Whilst removing what I believe was the exhaust manifold, a stud broke, thus requiring them to drop the engine, this means even more new parts I was told. Total bill retail £6,900!

I have a print out of the parts list and estimate that was sent to Extended Warranty for authorisation, this is obviously a trade price. £4,545.25p
Most of the parts on this list (3 pages) were discounted @ 44.7%
I note from the paper work and also had this confirmed... new oil and coolant were applied to this job.

Anyway, I'm very happy with the work and it was all covered under the All In Warranty they sold me a year ago. Very lucky for me!
Current Mileage 42,900

@Dellmassive
Just had a new Bi-Turbo system fitted under warranty. Please add me to the list of failed Turbos on the CXEB.

Out of interest, if today you have a replacement bi-turbo system fitted under warranty, is it updated in anyway from the original system fitted at factory in 2018 ?

Thank you.

there is some revisions in the turbocharger from the 2018 revision, i remember them saying i needed different brackets and pipes for the new turbo.

im not sure of the exact rev changes though.

I've got the paperwork for the new turbo. . . - @Dellmassive`s T6 T32 Sportline 204 LWB DSG PV MY18 - Van Adventure

I've just had another look at the orginal turbo,

there is three plates on it, one on each turbo and a main plate at the top that you can see when fitted - by the charge cooler hose.

small turbo plate has no PART number,

the LARGE turbo is the same,

but then there is the third plate at the top - that shows the PART NUMBER.

Looking at a used 2017 204bhp with only 15,000 miles (camper van).

It’s up for auction, so won’t check it out.

How concerned should I be regarding this engine?

I wouldn't, personally, and the converter I bought from won't use 204s for their conversions either.

Others, however, have owned them and been hassle free. The mileage on that one would certainly be on your side.

It's your call.

Its a great engine.

It will drive great.

The anxiety will sit in the back of your mind every day you own it.

Every vehicle is a risk but this one comes with bigger bills.

It's up to you if you can make peace with it and enjoy it.

I don’t see many mileages listed here.

Does it affect all mileages, like can it be due to age.

For example does anyone know if this has occurred at under 40,000 miles?

engine wear for the TPI kick in around 80K miles.
