Cam & Aux Belt Tensioner Noise, Recorded.

Just had my local main dealer do my MOT, (passed) they advised I need a new auxiliary belt and tensioner (just 4 years old and 19k miles) I asked if signs of wear or stretching (there is a 15mm tolerance between rollers to show stretch). They said no but it's not sitting on the roller fully.
Said they could do it for £270!
This is what it looks like once I got it home, happy to buy the parts and change both, but no squeaking nor issues, not sure whether to change or not?
It's hanging over the roller perhaps 1-2mm.

I had mine done recently, but only because it was squeaking! My van will be four years old in June. I took it to my regular garage and they charged me £165.... the parts were about £100.

I suppose your only issue (as it’s not squeaking) is that it’s sitting just off the roller, but then the belt is toothed on the other side? Maybe a new tensioner will pull it into line?

I may just give a proper visual check by cranking it round by hand, make sure it's not cracked or showing signs of wear on the slight overhang. And just keep an eye on it. Mine is a camper so not going anywhere for a while. May change belt and tensioner in the spring if we come out of lockdown.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong but there have been a few cases reported on the forum where the aux belt failure has caused the timing belt to foul in the lower timing belt cover?

Just had the aux belt and tensioner replaced under warranty after suffering from the dreaded squeaky engine bay noise on start up. It has gradually got worse over the last couple of outings. ( i've been sheilding so only been taking the van for a run out every 10 days or so). The squealing stops after about 5 minutes. T6 102 (Jan19) with 13k on the clock. Not sure if the van being laid up so much over the last 12 months has contributed to the problem!

I'm thinking about getting an engine undertray to keep some of the crud out of the engine bay.

Can't believe i'm writing this. Just been out in the van and the bloody squeak is back as bad as ever ffs!

Any ideas what else it might be?

I might just call vw assist in the morning to see if they can offer an opinion. Obviously it'll have to go back to the dealer.

Did they really change it or just spray on some belt dressing?

My son suggested they may have just sprayed it and hoped it was sorted but,

The invoice states "replacement aux belt and pulley carried out under warranty".

That’s probably what they invoiced VW for on the warranty and caught up some time.

Can someone point me in the direction of where the aux belt and pulley is on the 2.0TDI T6 engines?

Mine is pretty squeaky and I'd like to see it before I decide what to do. Do I need to remove any covers to get a proper look at it?

Down the left hand side of engine block below and slightly behind the cam-belt cover. Probably need your torch on your phone for a picture.

Sorry. it's on the right of the engine. "Left" sideif you are standing in front of the van...soz...been a long dayo_O
