Camping Ideas and Tips

Excuse the tree trunk 6ft 7" leg, but those fecking midges got me badly last weekend, something like 200 bites on my legs, plus my arms, back of my neck etc.

6'7"leg. How tall are you then?

Ouch. Mozzies love me too. I got bitten to death in Tuscany one year. My legs looked liked Donner kebabs. I went to a pharmacist and asked if he had anything for them, showing my legs in shorts. In very good English he said with a laugh "Yeah, long trousers" Thanks, a great help!!

They love me too for some reason.

It won’t stop the biting but I find that the antihistamine cream from Boots really stops the itching. They also do a stronger one with hydrocortisone in it but I’ve never had to go that far.

I try minimise the bites as far as possible using a spray (usually Jungle Formula nowadays) and citronella candles when sitting around in the campsite but the little feckers still give me the occasional nip. I've never understood why they love me and refuse to go anywhere near my wife. We've now been together for 40ish years and it's always been the same all over the world.

Strange isn't it. The time I was badly bitten in Italy, we went with another family, so 8 in total. I was the only one attacked. Got stung by a wasp too. I then became allergic to wasp stings and that whole episode buggered up my system and began suffering really bad allergies to all sorts that I had never had a problem with before, including becoming allergic to penicillin. I was taking anti histamine everyday for over a year to try and kickstart my body to work again as the doctors believed my body went into overdrive with its histamine production. I suffered like that for 3 years or so, then, other than hay fever, I don't really have them anymore that I am aware of but won't risk getting stung by a wasp or taking penicillin.

Sounds like the sting triggered an immuno-hyperactivation episode. When a young child, Mrs Bav had a similar thing when a spot on the top of her forehead became infected. Over the course of a few minutes, her face ballooned massively, to the extent that she could hardly see out from behind her swollen cheeks and forehead. Apparently, when she walked in the door at home, her mother could barely recognise her! Ever since, she's been highly allergic to fur - cat, dog, rabbit, you name it - and even now, 50 years later, she still gets the occasional over-reaction to things like mosquito bites.

Ouch, that looks so bad.

Did you use any of the above repellent s?.....
No mate, nothing at all, wasn’t expecting any midges, naively.

We leave the repellent in the caravan and this was a van trip so didn’t have any with us, but I’ve added some to the van kit for next time.

After the recent 5day camping trip its time to look at a few goodies. . .

+

we had some crazy hard ground . . . . and some crazy strong winds.

these pegs once again performed perfectly.

we lost a couple due to well Stoney ground winning over the 10lb club hammer and getting bent . . . but in love & war and all that.

so i decided to get another set:

200W Renogy solar kit V2

solar is not a new thing for me . . . . but this kit is great, so much so i decided to get a second one.

done a review here: [Guide] Mobile Solar Panels ? . . . - How I Did It -

++

this kit comes with crock clips to connect to any battery and get it charged up.

we ended up passing this kit round the campsite to help people get a battery boost.

I bought one of those a few months ago in readiness for our trip around Scotland and the Islands.
Didn't see one midge or mozzie in the 4 weeks we were away!
Handy light though...

Camp Food -- All Day Breakfast --

Controversial this one . . .

its like marmite, you either love it - or hate it.

me personally i love it.

its great for camping as its tinned, has a long life, easy to cook . . . its brilliant beer munchies food - alongside the classic pot noodle.
