CandyVan conversion journey

Any issues raising the floor that amount? eg with side step, or rear threshold?
Looks like 34mm raise from top of van floor ribs?
(9mm insul + 18mm ply/xps + 5mm ply + 2mm altro ?)

And how did you support the narrow slither of floor inbetween the left hand reimo rail and the side step?

I'm doing similar but with Fabworx rails in the van. Thanks!

Work underway on the floor now. The seat rails added some complexity. 15mm ply (left over from the lifting bed base) glued in the spaces between ribs. 9mm insulation board glued on the ribs.

The floor is 18mm Ultralight ply/XPS sandwich, with another 5mm ply layer on top, and will have 2mm Altro over it. To fit the along rails, I had to rebate a channel, and plane down some of the packing where the van floor isn’t flat. The B pillars had to be trimmed at the bottom.

Side step, I got a Caravelle one. It needed longer clips and some packing underneath, following @Deaky advice.

Rear threshold- I had to trim the plastic threshold to the edge of the floor, and put edging strip along.

Narrow sliver of floor was a supported on a festival of packers and glue.

The biggest challenge was getting the floor to meet the taper of the walls. Because of the thickness of the floor the edges of it are very 3D.

@drinfinity great thanks for the detail!

I don't think I'll be able to go as thick as you did as I'm having a front passenger swivel slider which needs to be able to clear the rear floor height so I could be limited to 18mm

Where did you get the ply XPS? Can't seem to find it in b&q or my timber merchants.

My fresh water tank drain valve was originally pointing down, so it was the lowest thing sticking out under the van. With a different connector the valve body is now horizontal, and it is less likely to get snagged. A tiny job, but it was bugging me since I installed it.

The only two jobs I had done were the sliding bed (Reimo factory approved fitter) and the poptop (as I didn’t have a place to do it). The poptop always creaked horribly, so I finally took out the cab headliner and pulled the frame out. It looks like the frame was fitted with only a sliver of bonding, and lots of metal-metal contact.

I put it back with a tube and a half of adhesive, and let it set for a week. First trip out today and the creaking is pretty much gone.

Hi,

Merry Christmas Drinfinity and loving your work.

You suggested on another thread you sometimes sleep downstairs in the van with bike(s?) in by pushing the bed forwards. Do you happen to have any pictures with the bed unfolded and a bike in the back? If I misunderstood and you just transport your bikes in there I would be very grateful if you have that picture. I have seen the one with your bikes on a rack out the back. I have a LWB 4 motion and am looking at options for carrying bikes and 2 teenagers, but I would love to go on the odd adventure and sleep with a bike (or even two) inside.

Merry Christmas!

With me and 1 teenage daughter, her upstairs, me downstairs, I have the bed in the regular position at the back. Both wheels off each of the bikes, and the frames will go on the van floor, with the rear mechs going under the bed. I lock the wheels under the van.

With one more daughter then we have a generous tent outside for them to sleep in, I take the top bunk, bed in the seat position. Three bikes will stack in even with wheels on, seat either at the front or the back.

I have lots of plastic backed picnic blankets to protect the bikes from each other, and keep oily scratchy bits away from the van. I do have a 12v pressure washer to get the worst of the muck off on a 2day event, to keep the van reasonably clean.

No pictures I’m afraid. A three panel seat/bed on a slider does give you a bit more space than the RocknRoll style, as you can fold up or remove the back panel.

I built a rack to carry the recovery racks tonight. Two 300mm lengths of 4040 extrusion. M10 studs carry the racks, secured with long handwheels. The 4040 is secured to the rack with M6 button head bolts, with 15x30x2mm alloy washers (drilled and cut from strip). I’ll do some more photos of the rack in daylight.
