Fickle MPG

650 miles on the clock and averaging 33 mpg but it usually lives in Sport, trying to slow down my driving style

I can always achieve a higher average mpg by driving myself as opposed to using cruise control.

If the MPG is as low as 30 after 6 months its 100% getting remapped.

200 miles covered today lugging some rubble and managed 30.5 mpg on the MFD. 1/3rd of the tank used. Pretty chuffed with that result.

I thought I'd start a post about how much the MPG seems to vary...

I've had my van, a 150 dsg kombi highline, for 2 months now and have covered 3250 miles in it. My trip to work is roughly a 75 mile round trip and consists motorway (75%), single/dual carriageway (20%) and town (5%) by distance. I leave early and get home late so generally I don't get stuck in much traffic...

According to the MFD the average trip can be anywhere between 28-37 MPG, but is usually between 30-32 MPG.

The van regens regular as clockwork (which I guess is a good thing?) as soon as it's filled up and again on the last block before the 1/2 tank mark.

The van is never loaded at more than 100kg, I use the cruise control on the motorway so the speed is constant.

I'm not looking to start a debate about real MPG vs claimed MPG (plently have covered that elsewhere)

I would like to gain thoughts and feedback about how it can vary so much when driving the same route?...

Thanks Paul
Hi all had Sandy for nearly a year 150 dsg highline window van converted to a camper by Bilbos. We go to Cornwall on a regular basis just over 400 mls we've got 12000 mls on the clock. Last time coming back did it on just over half a tank. On the motorway MDF says 50-56 mpg. I only trundle along between 60-65 mph and I have it on coast setting. Ad blue seems to work out around 4000-5000 mls per full tank so I've got no complaints so far.

Yeah, weren't you dithering between 204/150 and DSG/not DSG?

I went for a 150 DSG as I just cant be bothered changing gears ha

The 204 engine with DSG was my first choice but as I couldn't have both I took a drop in power for the DSG box. As its only mine for 3 years I don't care if it has issues with DSG as under warranty. I also thought as it will rarely have anything other than me and my family in it wont be putting as much strain on it.

at least with 150 I can get a remap which in my experience will not only put power up to nearly 200 but will potentially add a couple of MPG

Mine is remapped to 188bhp & 320lbft. No change in mpg at all. Far more drivable though. Turbo spool is much quicker.

Fair enough! I think the the 150 DSG issues are the exception rather than the rule, although I think they've had more exceptions than they would have liked. For me driving the 204 manual loaner made my mind up instantly. Torque steer in a van will keep my simple mind amused all day long!

What's that then?? ;)
