[Guide] [T6_modified] T6 Webasto Aux/Parking (water) Heater Configuration with VCDS

@nuttygt4 sounds like you are going off on a bit of a tangent here to the original purpose of the thread ?
If i understand it correctly you have the engine heater and want to change it over to be a parking heater and feed the cab, to my knowledge regardless of the overhead unit you need to flash the firmware of the heater to make it compatible with this function and accept external inputs to control it ?
I think a couple of the guys that have done this may be able to provide some info and then maybe we can split this into a separate thread

Pauly, It seems like it, all I'm after is the overhead panel working with my water heater. I will start another post and see how it goes. Cheers

I have managed to find the time to do a full scan, I have attached it, if anyone can help me out with this I would be grateful.

My concern in the autoscan is the fault:
01207 - Control Module for Auxiliary Heater (J364)
011 - Open Circuit
It has been registered 82 times - and the fault was there at the time of scan (otherwise should have been registered as intermittent). A wiring problem?

I still would like to think these are "a matched pair" as the configuration seems to be the same as found earlier in this thread on Ross-Tech site See earlier

However google seems to find mentions that 7E0 815 071 C might be just an engine heater and thus needing a firmware change... and I had a scan with this heater but without a control unit... :speechless:

Updates to the original post:
PS. In late MY18 (recently delivered) vans the low voltage cut-out configuration has been changed, see picture below. The both vans from where the codings (above and below) were grabbed have second battery from factory under left seat.
The reason probably is that in MY18 onwards the Webasto coolant heater is powered from starter battery (even with factory installed aux battery). In MY17 and before the power feed was from the aux battery (when factory installed). However there are some indications that the transition is not exactly at MY18/17 transition but within early MY18... EDIT: Wiring diagrams states that change is effective NOV-2017 onwards.

Definitely makes sense to have van's energy management take care of all the onboard consumers. However now it's not clear what are the cut-out conditions as it obviously comes from van's energy management. In stand-alone configuration the condition for Webasto presumably was - less than 11.3V [EDIT: value corrected] for more than 20 seconds (based on values in module 18 adaptations).

PS 2. Does anyone know access code for adaptations? The controller accepts code 20103 but it still doesn't allow me :thumbsdown: to tweak adaptation channels. Not that there is any need to change anything, just don't like the idea not having all the controls :whistle: .
The VCDS reports "invalid message length" and thus adaptations are rejected. There seems to be a mismatch in communication protocol. Ross-Tech is aware of the issue and the root cause so would expect to see it fixed eventually. Details --> VW Transporter T6, Address 18 Aux.Heat --- Adaptation FAIL

However OBDeleven handles this just fine (verified with version 0.11.2, the current as today) :thumbsup:.

Hello !

Thanks a lot for this topic!
I'm living in Finnish Lapland (we have -40°c sometimes), and I need to heat the engine too (my Caravelle is coming from France).
Please, what is the path to follow in VCDS to access to this window/panel to change settings?

Welcome! The path should be pretty obvious as soon as you have hooked the VCDS into vans OBD socket:
Control Module --> 18 Aux. Heat --> Coding
Then there should be the views as at the top of this thread.

What you have for starting up the Webasto, an overhead panel and/or a remote?

Thanks !
I have overhead panel and the remote.
The Webasto is : Thermo Top Evo, 12v / 5,0 kW, diesel, max 2.5bar

I tried.
My window is different, like this.
vag com webasto.png
I untick the BIT 2, saved, and tested...
I don't think the engine is warming. All is cold (0°c today, so it's easy to feel a difference and not a lot to warm).
I used a thermal camera and nothing is warmer after 30 minutes on the engine block/
I checked again with the computer, the BIT 2 is unticked.

Strange.

So the bit 2 was ticked thus the original coding was 5401 (as in the picture).
Did you check if there are any faults in the heater? Did it start to heat the cabin then right away? When did the cabin fresh air blower start to blow (how many minutes from starting the heater)?
Yes, you should see the engine coolant to warm up to 30C in about 5-6 minutes (e.g. could monitor engine coolant temperature in module 01).
Can you hear coolant circulation pump running?

It's working! The top of the engine stay cold, but I puted my hand behind the engine and he is really warm!

THANKS A LOT ! :D
After 3 winter, next will be better for my engine ;)

Hello

Greetings from Finland. It is getting cold here and only cabin is warming up in my T5.1.
I read the coding and it is 1322 => 1 0011 0010 0010 so it is atleast 4 bytes now.

Seems like coding is totally different from what presented here ?!
My van is MY13 with 2.0TDI 103kw. Heater is 7E0819008D
There is overhead display, 2nd battery and telestart from factory.

My VCDS (newest version) with HEX PRO does not show any interpretation for coding.

Hello there - not far away!

Interested to see full VCDS Scan of your van (you can remove last 6 digits of the VIN) - so I could try to find a similar one.

Meanwhile you could try German version of the VCDS as it seems there is a label file for your heater :sneaky: (a matching file name with the heater). Would be interesting to see if the coding is decoded there. If this works please copy the screenshots (alt-PrtScr) then here (ctrl-V into message).

German VCDS download --> Downloads
It installs into a different directory so it does not interfere with the current one. However as your license probably doesn't cover German VCDS it will be just "read-only" - but anyways the codings will be shown.

Interesting. I downloaded and run it. It does not let do anything, not even autoscan. I could open aux heater and see same coding.
There was actually label file for it but when copied to english version of vcds, it did not change anything. (copied to label file directory, should I do something more for it?)

Here is the label file 7E0-819-008.clb

Ouch, that's interesting. Obviously the few modules I have been snooping around using German version were not "locked" as all the coding explanation were available - as "read only".

Yes, the label-directory is the place where the files are. As the files are encrypted (for obvious reason) seems the encryption is not the same as in English version.

Perhaps you could ask Ross-Tech to move the German label-file into English VCDS? ---> Product Support:

PS. The same heater as yours at Ross-Tech Forum ---> VW Transporter 2012 - Webasto Aux heater remote coding (label file none)

PS2. Thanks for the scan. Let's see if I can catch a similar one but configured to heat the engine.

Found a similar MY14 with 7E0 819 008F + OEM remote + overhead controller. The coding was "0020322". Another MY12 had 0000022. In addition to that got confirmation that on "regular" cars the change over valve coding is as "xxxxOxx" [EDIT: bit misalignment].

So there is pretty high confidence that coding 18-Aux.heater " as 001022" [edited] should do the trick for you. The other "bytes" are for remote installed/no, low voltage cutoff etc.

Well I think I don´t follow now fully... Changing from 1322 (dec) to 0322(dec) will change three bits

I also got hint that it would be 5th bit so 1290(dec) would not set that bit but let others be as they were.

I presume you mean hex when you say dec?

Well - I just did VCDS Scans of a similar vans. But I didn't look how it looks when "entering into the module" :oops:.

However, I did have a look at coding of another heater (7E0 815 071 B) which does not have the label file either. Noticed that there won't be the usual coding helper. Instead there is just a similar screen you posted so I assume you need simply type the "0001022"[edited] in there and then just "Do it". It is all in hex. The binary equivalent would be 0000 0000 0000 0001 0000 0010 0010.

okay it is not about bits, it is just numbers. From VCDS forum found out:

00?xxx2: Axiliary Functions
0 = Start-Stop not active/installed
2 = Start-Stop is active/installed

00x?xx2: Remote Control
0 = Remote Control/Telestart not installed
1 = Remote Control/Telestart is installed

00xx?x2: 2/3-valve
0 = ENGINE & CABIN => to be verified
2 = ENGINE => to be verified
3 = CABIN => VERIFIED, FACTORY DEFAULT

00xxx?2: HVAC Type:
0 = Just Heating
2 = A/C with Climatic type controls
3 = A/C with Climatronic type controls

So mmi...you are 100% right, coding 20322 makes sense too. We will see tomorrow morning how it did change after I now set it to zero...1022
