Lithium LifePo4 12v Batteries - Time For An Upgrade?

Quick one you wizards, I’m looking to go Renogy Core 100ah with victron shunt as the battery doesn’t have BT, is the low temp cut off enough protection (0 degrees according to renogy) or is battery heating a must?

Heating is completely optional - low temp cut off is a non-negotiable, either via the battery BMS or your chargers.

No heating just means you won't be able to charge the battery when it's below zero. You can still use the battery when it's below freezing - discharging is fine - charging is not.

Lovely jubbly cheers buddy.

Hi All, just need some help in fitting a new battery, 51 pages is alot of reading! I have just bought an ecoworthy 100Ah LiFePo4 battery, i have a 2017 T6 and it has a Sterling
Power B2B fitted as per picture below and it has the LiFePo4 setting available, I also have the Victron battery charger 12/15 and the Victron Mppt 75/10 on my portable solar panels which both have the LiFePo4 setting. so my question is what else do i need and how am i best connecting the wiring to the terminals?

Thanks Sam

You'll need to have low temperature cut off set on all your chargers, which may be easier on some than others. NEVER charge a standard LifePO4 battery when it's below freezing.

Yeah I've read that, i fear I've jumped the gun a bit and should have spent a bit more on the battery which had it all built in. Im probably going to have to spend more now to get it set up suitably.

Think i may have to change my B2B as well due to its size!

Got major buyers remorse now!

To rub it in, the new Fogstar Drift ECO (without BMS or heater but with low temp cut off) is only £30 more than the lowest the ecoworthy battery was...

Check which model of Ecoworthy you have. The newer ones (seem to say 4000 cycles on the side rather than 3000) appear to have cold temp charge protection on the BMS. The German ones also have Bluetooth but they aren’t on the UK website (when I looked a week ago).

Yeah it has 4000 cycles on it, so that’s slightly positive!

I've messaged them to be sure. So if its got low temperature protection, i should be ok as my sterling charger doesn’t have a low temperature protection, i guess i could fit a isolation switch between battery in the charger? Do i need to get a shunt so that i can monitor the battery information? I have a bluetooth monitor thing already:IMG_6524.png

A shunt is much, much more accurate as it measures the actual power going in and out of the battery to calculate the percentage left. The BM2 you have just makes a guess based on voltage at the time which will vary depending on draw or charge. They are almost pointless for a lifepo4 battery. The Victron Smart 500A shunt is good and works via an app (no screen).

p.s. if the battery has protection then you will be fine.

OK, so I've read through the last 51 pages (maybe skimmed a little bit). My original leisure battery, a Platinum AGM Plus Leisure Battery 12V 100Ah AGMLB6110L is now approaching 5 years old and appears to be showing its age, and so looking to upgrade. The current battery is built into a cabinet in the rear of my T6, so I'm restricted in dimensions. As i’m limited in space, my options i’ve found so far are:

Lithium Leisure Battery - Fogstar Drift 12v 105Ah (£299.99)
Lithium Leisure Battery - Fogstar Drift 12v 105Ah

Roamer 105Smart4 (£360.05) with discount
Roamer 105SMART4 - 12V 105Ah LiFePO4 Lithium Battery

Renogy Pro-12V 100Ah Deep Cycle Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery w/Bluetooth (£339.99) - minus 6% using @Dellmassive code and possibly 6.82% TopCashBack
Pro-12V 100Ah Deep Cycle Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery w/Bluetooth

Or top end of my budget is the:
Sterling Power 12V 150Ah LiFePO4 - LP12150 - Performance with heater (£478.80) plus £12 postage
12V 150Ah LiFePO4 - LP12150 - Performance w/ heater

I have a Sterling BB1230 Battery to Battery charger with a Renogy 1000W inverter (the inverter is just for Ebike battery charging and is rarely used as I normally use EHU). No solar, but I may add sometime in the future (been saying that for the last 5 years…) Heating and cooking done in the van with a Wallas XC Duo.

Any opinions on the above batteries? I think they're all similar spec with a Sterling having the largest capacity. I like the idea of good support, so Roamer, Sterling and possibly Fogstar. I like the idea of matching the Sterling B to B charger with a Sterling battery. I like the idea of the increased capacity of the Sterling, but not sure if it's really necessary as I normally use EHU. Any suggestions or comments appreciated.

I can't locate an isolator from the leisure battery, is there an order for disconnecting and reconnecting a new battery? Negative first, followed by positive?

I can certainly vouch for Roamer. After sales support from them is superb, they still care even with my battery approaching 3 years old. The app is spot on, never had an issue and with a 10 year warranty, I would expect not to!
I'm in sales myself and I love the way Roamer work! My next battery will be a bigger Roamer!
If you use EHU mostly, a 105Ah will be more than enough.
£360 is a good price too.

As you use EHU then a 105ah is more than sufficient. The Roamer is a good price with great feedback of their support. I have the Fogstar and it’s been brill and £299 is an excellent price as it’s normally £369. Mine has been faultless so I’ve had no need to use their support but they were very good through the buying/delivery process and are UK based. I spoke to them at one of the shows and they were very helpful there.

I’d avoid the Renogy and Ecoworthy as they do not have UK support. I had the displeasure of trying to deal with Renogy about a solar panel and it was an awful experience. There is zero benefit of matching with the Sterling other than the higher capacity which it looks like you don’t need.

You will need to change the black CBE mains charger as it doesn’t have a lithium profile (unless it’s a different model from the one I’m familiar with). That should be fairly easy as you can tap into the existing cables for it. I’m assuming the installer has also correctly disabled or bypassed the charger relay in the CBE DS300 box when the Sterling was installed? That will either be the R37 resistor snipped (bottom left) or switched off (some versions have a switch) or nothing connected to the B1 positive connector (bottom right).

As @ginkster says. 105 will give double effective capacity over what you have now, so if you’ve been doing ok so far then 105 LiFePo will be more than enough.
I have the Renogy and it’s been great. But I had one slight issue and the support is non existent so I won’t buy again.
Recently fitted a Fogstar drift into a T6 and it’s a great battery with a heater and a very nice app.
That would be my choice if I was doing mine again.

We have a 5% discount code for Roamer batteries.

Just another couple of options
The eco worthy doesn't come with a BMS App.

So be cautious as there is no way of determining it's state of charge.

Unless you add an additional shunt.... Which then makes it not as cheap.

Just to say where Im currently at....

I've had or have most of the batteries in the thread.

I loved the Renogy lithiums and never had a problem with them, sure they are a china company with UK drop ship wearhouse...

And I've had many dealing with the Renogy support, and providing you give them the data they want and have a bit of patience they have always ended up completely replacing the items... So no issues from me.

But I have sold them all on now... Or kept I'm my battery boxes.

And the only reason for that is that I wanted larger capacity.

So I've swapped out both vans to 230ah seat base batterys.

I have a Fogstar 230 in the van and a Roamer 230 in the bus.

Both are very good quality.

Both use grade A prismatic cells

Both use a reputable BMS with good APP.

Both have UK customer support.

I'm also still running.

The Poweroad 100ah heated.

The ecoworthy 100ah ,(no app)

A 100ah Litime (no app)

.

Another thing to note is that as Roamer continues to improve and innovate the batteries and BMS and app keep improving.

They are currently on Gen4.

So depending on what battery you have you could have a different BMS with a different APP.
