No respect for other people's property

Also, according to the news, if you are in a car and turning into a side road and a pedestrian is waiting to cross the side road, you have to give way to the pedestrian.
That is correct, I can't see it's a bad thing.

I can't imagine a scenario where that would be the case
Read the new highway code about vehicle priorities on the road. Its been well discussed in the IAM group i belong to. Also plenty of into on the bet about it.

It's funny, I'm from the Netherlands and they have these rules there, the UK has basically copied what has been law in NL since god knows when.

Having spent the first 30yrs of my life there and learned to drive there it makes sense to me, and there it works fine as drivers are much more aware of cyclists, they've been there forever and the way the roads are set up it just works.

I can't see the same for UK roads though, there's a huge intolerance for anything else on the road, cyclists hate car drivers and visa versa, nobody wants to wait for anyone and on top of that the roads are shite and too narrow pretty much everywhere, it'll be interesting to see!

The other thing that amuses me is this 'Dutch reach' thing they keep talking about it. I've never heard of it before it appeared in these articles here in the UK?!?

I see nowhere in the code that says it's ok for any road user to overtake a car on the RHS that's waiting to turn right. If you are stopped, waiting to turn right and there is a cyclist next to you, waiting to turn right then you must let the cyclist take the turn first.

So would the cyclist be next to you on your left of right?

If there was one lane going right, I would be waiting in my place in the queue to turn right, taking the lane so that a car behind wouldn't try to squeeze past. If there was a cycle box at the junction, I would be in that and assume that I had the right to go first, but assume that someone might not want me to.

 I can't find the diagram in the code I was referring to now, but you're right. I would always wait my turn in the queue of cars, even is there was a cycle box cause the last thing you want, despite what most drivers would think, is a pissed of car driver behind you.

See rule H3

Looking at that picture/graphic. It's not on the .GOV site so maybe should be taken with a pinch of salt. The description for rule H3 is the same as .GOV though

So all the Power Rangers have now got permission from the Highway Code to ride in the middle of the road?
FFS, they'll be absolutely loving that, just think of the tailbacks they'll be able to cause now.

For cyclists...

You should

  • keep both hands on the handlebars except when signalling or changing gear
Then how am I supposed to peel a banana, or open a flackjack wrapper, or take my gilet off and fold it up to fit in my jersey pocket... ?

As a keen on/off road cyclist and car/van driver;
The top right graphic shows car in a one way street with bikes either side, maybe promoting/encouraging the type of bike use currently seen.
If a vehicle driver was stopped adjacent the centre white line of a two way street the cyclist to his right shouldn’t be there.
This is highlighted in the lower graphic, showing the cyclist should now ride on the centre of the lane.
So, if arriving after the vehicle, they should be on the centre of the lane, behind the vehicle.

Not strictly true, it's recommended to ride in the centre of a lane to increase your safety at junctions. Riding in the centre of a busy road is unlikely to increase your safety

I haven't had to take my hands off the bars to change gear since the 80's

That has always been in the Highway Code, at least since I first read it 60+ years ago. Maybe it changed in the meantime!

Just realised, this thread has gone waaaaaaaaaaaay of topic
