Hi,
I have General Grabbers AT3 235/55 18 on alloys (8,5 x 18 et45) , with some spacers on.
This means that my alloy wheels have other bolts than my 16 inch spare.
In short I need to have an extra wrench 17mm and 19mm to undo the alloys and replace with steel wheel. (and always have 5 steel wheel bolts with me)
Secondly the standard 16 inch has a tyre size of 215/65 16, so a smaller circumference.
A while ago i had a small puncture, and none of the above tools with me... So that started me thinking what is my best 'scenario'?
Option1
Ditch the 16inch steel, and replace with a 5th alloy with same tyresize
+ no hassle with carrying different bolts
+ the spacers can remain on
+ circumference is identical
- extra costs for a new alloy with tyre
- extra 17mm wrench
? will this combo fit under the van
Option2
Ditch the 16inch steel and replace with a 18inch steel with same tyresize
+ cheaper option (18inch amarok spare is already bought (2nd hand))
+ circumference is identical
- ET differs from alloys , because of spacers and wheel size
- still need 5 extra steel bolts with me and extra tools for 17mm and 19mm bolts
? will the faulty alloy wheel fit under the van
Option3
Use the 16inch spare
+ no cost option
- different circumference
- ET differs from alloys , because of spacers and wheel size
- still need 5 extra steel bolts with me and extra tools for 17mm and 19mm bolts
? will the faulty alloy wheel fit under the van
Option4
Who needs a spare? Buy a mini compressor and tyre fluid...
Option5
Go swamper all the way and buy spare wheel holder for the rear tailgat that can fit an alloy.
+looks nice
- heavy for the tailgate
- maybe in the way when carrying bikes on the towbar
I've read some topics here where the spare wheel carrier can be adapted to fit an 18inch wheel.
My main concern is that whatever combo is there for a spare, that when changing wheels the faulty one will need to fit under there.
Open for suggestions/thoughts...
