Every plate config states where the vehicle is from - mine is the original way of designating that and been on the family since originally issued

You mean the letters referring to a place of issue or registration? Used to be the last three letters in the old system, and the system before that it was the first three letters. Did the original system also do that?

So with 9999 DF, the letters refer to the place that the first car with it was registered?

yes you are correct - undated plates like mine the letters could designate vehicle registration location

old style plates example FDG 53T the 2nd and 3rd letter designate location and currently it’s the first two letters

I used to have a book (eye spy?) when the plates were XYZ 12X format, it told you what all the area codes were, seem to recall they were the first two letters of the three. EDIT - as you say, the second and third letter. Presume was the same when they swapped them to put the letters at the end.

I know there are a lot of Mx's in and around Manchester, and lots of Yx's in Yorkshire.

This is how the new style were launched by DVLA and it still stands

The original plates were 2nd and 3rd letter.

Once in France 20+ years ago on a campsite someone came to talk to me because they recognised my number plate location. Turns out they lived just down the road.

car dispersal is much greater these days so has lost the impact

I've still got the same book some where from the 70"s (given to me )with all the regs for each are.
Shropshire had 4 and were NT, AW UX and UJ as mentioned above it was the 2nd and 3rd letter that designated the area. This all changed when they reversed the system then eventually started the 51 system

Talking of Shropshire plates, I worked on a farm as a boy, and they had VUX 4Y on an Austin Ambassador. That went for scrap with a few weeks MOT still on it. I wish I'd bought that for it's number to this day.

There was also a lad who lived up the road with a Mk2 Cavalier. It's reg was DEJ 4Y. Imagine what that is worth now.

Random browsing one evening a few years ago ended with me buying two really old style plates, with the last three letters being my initials S555 AVW and S222 AVW. I don’t think this number format is particularly popular as private plates, so they weren’t expensive. The former is on my wife’s Merc and the latter will go on my soon to be picked up van, which of course is A VW - an unforeseen coincidence!

Another more recent browse, shortly after seeing a sneek peek of the T7, meant I spotted T7 VWF when it came up so I grabbed that, perhaps in the hope that I might one done have a van to match

Mine is E50 ALE (My surname if you change the 50 to SD). Its been on a few cars and a few bikes over the years but now its permanently on my camper. I also have ES04 ALE on my car.

Not got the van yet, but it will be wearing the wife's. I used to think that the only reason to have a private plate was that you had more money than sense. Then I found cheap ones on DVLA.
