We enjoyed the east coast for reasons different to the west. The east has some nice places such as Dornoch, Dunrobin Castle, little harbours like Staxigo, Latheronwheel (free stopover), Lybster harbour (free stopover) and Whaligoe Steps and loads of dramatic rocky coastline. Castle Sinclair at Noss Head.
The west is stunning for its beaches and bays. If you’ve got a month then I’d say don’t neglect the East. If you don’t like it just keep on driving, but we like it. We’ve done the East coast again this year after we had 5 days on Mull (would have stayed on the West but the weather turned dreadful).
Also (although not sure if they will remain into October) there are loads of dolphin and basking shark sightings at the moment on the east coast from those harbours and also from The Trinkie.
I wouldn’t bother with John o Groats, unless you want the obligatory photo of yourself stood next to a sign in a car park. Go to Duncansby Head instead and walk along the coast to the Stacks.
Take some decent binoculars.

Fair point, having said not to bother with the east coast, there's nothing particularly bad about it, it's just that the west blows it into the weeds in regards to the scenery.
