Should I apply Body Corrosion Inhibitor?

Just to update this thread, I’ve recently had a quote to treat a new T6.1 LWB 4Motion campervan conversion from one of the listed Dinitrol centre near me. As a new vehicle, the centre proposes treating it in Dinitrol clear protection wax which will be applied to the underside components (floor panels, subframes, suspension components, electrical plugs etc.). They will then coat the gearbox casings, radiators, differentials, heat shields, etc. in a heatproof Dinitrol clear protection wax. Apparently these two Dinitrol products are only applied to new vehicles.

Following this, they will apply full cavity wax injection of inner and out sills, chassis rails, all cavities, rear wheel arches, lowers of all doors, tailgate, bonnet and engine bay seams.

The treatment will take a full three days to complete and twenty detailed photographs of before, during and after treatment will be provided to document the work. The total cost to undertake the treatment will be £1380 (including VAT). Based on others’ comments of having Dinitrol treatment, this looks a bit on the high side. Should I consider going elsewhere or is this the going rate?

Hi all,

We picked up our 2017 Caravelle on Monday afternoon, got near home (which is an hour away from the VW showroom) carefully went over the first speed bump on the journey to discovery a nasty noise from the front passenger wheel.
Also drivers heated seat not working.
The caravelle has only done 19000+ miles.

The next morning VW assist came out and found the front spring was broken and the vehicle’s MOT was expiring (VW promised a new one). As you can imagine I was absolutely fuming.

It’s back with VW after being recovered.
They are changing both front springs, sorting the drivers heated seat. I’m pushing for the back springs to be changed.

Anyway the VW assist technician said there was decent amount of surface rust under the vehicle. Which I’ve read here on this forum is common.

I would like to get it professionally protected underneath - are there any company’s that the forum recommend? I’m in Essex but willing to travel for the right service.

Many thanks

Rob

I’m sure there are companies that will do it but the surface rust is exactly that and the van will be dead and crushed before those heavy cast steel items need replacing.

I have put waxoyl under a car before - wasn’t too bad - just noticed it needs a touch up in a couple of places after about 7yrs.

What it will stop is the floor rusting out, especially irritating locality of suspension component, which is an MOT fail.

It is possible at home, but I’ve found many local garages will plastic sheet their workshop for a weekend once or twice a year and get as many vehicles through as possible to limit the mess and hassle, and this is much easier than being covered in the stuff for a week!

As far as I’m aware all T6 panels are galvanised prior to painting. I have a 22 year old galvanised Audi and the panels and floor pan are rust free.

VW also seem to have sprayed a fair bit of wax on the underside of mine.
However, one area worth treating is the spare wheel and associated retaining bits & pieces. It may never get used, but if you ever need it you don’t want to find it stuck to the underneath of the van.

BiltHamber do a lot of corrosion resistant products - not sure if they keep a list of commercial companies that would apply it for you? They appear easy enough to DIY.

I'll second Bilt Hambers Dynax line, If you have access to a compressor, you can pick up a spray gun for around £60.
Buying the wax in the 5 litre jugs is the cheapest way to do it.

I’ve successfully used Lanoguard (for the whole underside) and Bilt Hamber Dynax S50 (for the cavities) on several cars now. I found it was relatively quick and easy to apply using the applicators that come with both products with just the rear wheels raised on axle stands or ramps, a plastic sheet on the ground and PPE (gloves, Tyvek suit, safety glasses, etc.).

A Dinitrol franchise quoted £900 to treat the underside of my new T6.1 campervan. Unsurprisingly, I’m planning to do it myself when it arrives.

I see Lanoguard recommend 4L for underside of vans. Is this about right for T6 or would I get a way 2L. I asked Lanoguard the shelf life and they said 12 months so don't want to much surplus.

I have used the 4L Lanoguard kit for the underside of my T6. Not finished it fully yet (need to remove the spare). I also removed all the covers. I have used 2.5 litres so the 4L is the best option. Any left over will be used to re-apply in exposed area in a couple of years.

Evening all,
Just to add to my previous post. I only bought 2L in the end, before @Fazzaphil messaged. I didn't take all the covers off and 2L was more than enough.
I'm interested to know @Fazzaphil when you say all the covers, you mean all the black plastic trim on the underside? seemed a big job to me. Did you do all the engine bay?
I used the upside down patio cleaner trick for cleaning the underside which worked well enough.
Good video here from Lanoguard applying it to a T5 with good use of the grease.
Cheers

I treated the entire underside of my new LWB T6.1 Campervan last week. I did it myself; I booked a four post lift bay at: This Is Your Garage in Culham, near Abingdon. I used 2 litres of Lanoguard for the underside and a can of Bilt Hamber Dynax S50 for the cavities. It took 2.5 hours to do from start to finish, including removing and replacing all the plastic undertrays, and the spare wheel. Very few tools are required only an 8mm socket and ratchet to undo/tighten the tray fixing screws and 19mm socket to undo/tighten the spare wheel bolts. Total cost was around £150 Including materials and bay hire. As it was a new vehicle straight from the converter there was no need to pressure wash the underside which made it a bit easier as all the fixings were clean and not corroded. The four post lift makes it a very easy job and gives you a good opportunity to inspect the underside yourself.

Morning all

I had a look under my T6 a few days ago and its looking a bit crusty

I have seen a few of the treatments used by people and I am considering either the Lanoguard or the Buzzweld lanolin underbody treatment

Has anyone tried them and can give an idea of which is best ? I realise that this is not long lasting but I want somethign that is easy to apply and isnt too ' gunky ' so this seems good

Down mind a yearly top up

Cheers Ian

I can't offer experience but I am also looking at Lanoguard. Not for the T6 but for our pick up. I'm hoping to get the chance to do it next week so will let you know if it seems up to the task. I appreciate that it's ultimately about longer term protection but I imagine that the initial application might give mixed feelings about its abilities!!

Have used Lanoguard on a few of my last cars and put some under the van when new. It definitely helps as you can see where I missed bits 18 months down the line.
I'll try to top it up before winter.

It's amazing isnt it that these utility vehicles come so badly protected ! My Nissan pickup was the same so I want to do the van before it gets any worse as it already have surface corrosion on parts

Ok thats great thank you I guess they are all similar but as the vans are expensive I thought it was a low cost compared to the cost of the product and it cant do any harm so worth a go

Just to be different I have just ordered some Buzzweld to see what it is like it seems exactly the same and I can always top up with Lanoguard next year if needed. Will update when it arrives and I have had a chance to put some on
