Yep. OEM spare 205 or 215-16 is already a tight fit. Wider one would need some spacers. The spare will definitely get sand blasted when on gravel roads, so having the shiny side down (=vent down for easy pressure checking) is something you probably don't like. It's not the theft of the wheel that worries me as much as the damage they will do trying to pinch it. Keeping the wheel inside, when I have the room stops the temptation.
Plus the alloy possibly wouldn't fit underneath anyway, and it would just get ruinined under there with all the driving I do.
When you buy the spare locking but it comes with a little plastic device that you push over the metal cap to pull it off

Genuine VW Spare Wheel Locking Bolt and Anti Theft Security Shroud For Added Protection
Bloody scumbags , get the lock bought m8 it wont stop them but will slow them down and will have to hammer a socket on the locking nut to get it offHi,
So yesterday whilst parking her car outside our house my wife disturbs some ‘S@#£&=E’ trying to steal the spare wheel from my T6. After some very choice words and being threatened with a spanner, even worse choice words from my wife and he’s off in a car! I was in the house and heard nothing!
My van was fitted with the VW secure bolt and when I’ve looked at it the ‘S@#£&=E’ had managed to remove the bolt under the shroud with pin nosed pliers (marks obvious), so was it done up tight enough?
I am well aware of the crime prevention mantra of proportionality and risk, target hardening and surveillance etc and I have searched the forums and threads on here for ideas.
I will push the button and get the Spare Safe lock tomorrow but just wondering if anyone has any update, latest thinking or ideas before I do?
Ps; and the beauty of this forum I will pick up the idea of swopping out the spare tyre when I get new ones for a just legal one so won’t feel so bad if it is nicked!
nope, not an option for me, unfortunately!I assume you have no space inside the van to put the wheel?
That's what I did, with a proper jack, but then mine is a full size 19" alloy spare to match the rest of my wheels, and my van has room to stick it inside.
Along with the obvious security bonuses, it also keeps the wheel in perfect condition, and tidies the rear end of the van up a little without the spare or hanger underneath.

Wind the coilovers all the way down
I harped on about this thing recently, people look at you as if your mad until something like this happen to them. Mine is fitted with the spare safe. but thought of fitting something like this:

Putting it through the hole next to the bolt which doesnt fully come out, it will prevent it from allowing you to slide the piece that holds the wheel up and if tampered give alarm.
