T6.1 MPG

150 KOMBI T30 manual

average long term is 36.7
average short term since restart circa 32.1

mainly a roads and motorway

and it gets driven fairly hard

Caravelle T6.1 199bhp getting just about 400 miles per tank if I’m lucky, approx £75 per fill, this returning about 20p per mile, not very good at all and that’s mostly motorway, don’t want to calculate around town costs!!
i have a similar issue with my Caravelle 199. I actually broke the 34mpg barrier this week for the first time but was lucky if I could break through 30 mpg on average when I first had it!

@Jordy have you got the discover pro? Took over 2 minutes to plan a 1.7 mile route yesterday
Yes I do have the pro system but haven't really had any issues with planning routes (so far!). I am fairly well versed in VW counter-intuitive sat nav system though having lived with it in one shape or form for the past 10 years.

@Jordy interesting, my local vw is considering a replacement unit, just waiting for vw to advise if indeed there is a remedy to the poi cluttering the screen
Lately, the directional line is so thin and pale it’s difficult to determine which way it wants me to go, on the T6 you could always press the right button and it would repeat the last instruction and of course you could zoom in on your position and keep it there

last week there was a space of 2+ minutes to calculate a route 1.7 miles away

I started off getting 35 mpg but by changing the way I drive I have reached 58 mpg - but not without some compromises!!

To get 58 mpg I had to:

- Stop stamping on the gas pedal - keep revs below 2000

- Coast as often as possible - good for downhill / empty roads / motorways - i have coasted for 2 miles on a long stretch on the A3

- Don’t use the brakes - easier on motorways than in heavy traffic

- Stay below 60mph, 50 something seems to work well in 5th gear (I could do with more gears!!)

I’m also going to try

- taking the seats out of the back (I have an 8 seater shuttle)

- using better diesel

- keeping revs even lower

I have seen people who get 60+ mpg on here and would really appreciate any tips on how to improve this?

BTW driving like this probably annoys other road users as I am that book who is doing 55 on the Motorway

NB - when I have my speedy head on I drop to 30-something MPG - which brings my lifetime MPG right down

Thanks for reading - this is my first VW and I love it - I get why this forum exists

@Dr-zozzy interesting post

I had been playing with the below 60mph and 2k revs and you’re right it’s not easy on the motorway

what engine have you in your shuttle? My Caravelle is somewhat heavier and is 199bhp and auto

We are likely close to crossing paths as I use the A3 probably twice a week, coffee and batter is always on the table

@Dr-zozzy. Well done you. My personal opinion is that how you drive is entirely up to you so long as you also show consideration for others. On motorways, it's not the people toddling along at 55MPH in the slow lane that are the problem - rather it's those same people who sometimes insist on pulling out to overtake a slow moving lorry, caravan etc. but still do not go past 55MPH as they are doing so (and sometimes, they also pull out at 55MPH without bothering to check if anything's coming or, indeed, indicating their intention to do so!). As for myself, I'm resigned to the pee poor fuel consumption from my van and decided a long time ago that life's to short to worry about such things.

@Ayjay some valid points, I concede life is too short to perhaps worry about such things, the purpose of this thread though was to see if my T6.1 199bhp was doing right by me

I did 120k miles in 26 months, (3 were lockdown) in my T6 150bhp so clearly notice the vast difference in return mpg, and with today’s pump prices it’s well over £200 per month extra, makes anyone sit up and take note ?

It takes some concentration to do it. I'm used to towing, so am often limited to 60mph anyway. Following lorries is the best way of doing it. You don't have to be all that close to benefit from their slipstream. Leave the cruise control well alone too.

Also, if your chosen lorry to follow overtakes, don't go with him. When he pulls back in, you'll be stranded in lane 2 without enough room to tuck back in behind him, so will use unnecessary fuel having to accelerate past him before being able to get back into lane 1 and ease the speed back down.

Hello Andyman, mine is a 110 bhp and is very slow off the mark. I would definitely like more power next time. Coffee and batter sounds good - I don't know what batter is but it sounds good

Yes I am careful not to annoy other road users with my little experiment, quite happy to trundle along at 70 to keep things moving

Banter is even better than batter, and less fattening, which in itself may help with mpg lol

Hi andyman, I have a T6 caravelle 199 with a revo remap and struggle to get anywhere near 400 miles around town, I did get over 32mpg when I drive it to Spain last year but that was all motorway driving!

The power is really good but the fuel economy does hurt, was thinking about changing to a T6.1 150bhp to improve the costs but in two minds as I love the way this one drives and don’t want to lose the power ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The cost to change to a newer van would buy one hell of a lot of diesel.

My T6 150bhp was awesomely economical (Caravelle) easily 500-520 from the tank against 400 on the T6.1 199bhp (Caravelle)

I am considering putting the Caravelle in and getting a T6 150 ocean, similar to your own thoughts, and then instead of driving 150miles home to return next day, can sleep in the bus, especially as hotels are a bit difficult at moment

I’m getting 28mpg from my 150 dsg swb kombi whilst towing 1600kg of caravan and fully loaded with family and junk. That’s impressive

I've always filled my T6 up when it gets down to the quarter mark as understood that anything below that could affect the regen. Consequentially measuring the mileage from full to the quarter. On average getting approx 400 to 420 (sometimes lower), so guessing if I filled up when empty this would be more like the 500 mark. Also keep an eye on the average consumption and noticed that after changing the wheels to 255R18 45 this increased to the mid 30's, though it will go over 40 dependent on the trip. Have to say that coming from a Jag XE that was giving mid 60's the T6 was a bit of a shock .....
