T6 Heated Steering Wheel retrofit

Mine only has the two power cores so I’m still investigating what I can do with that ??

Generally speaking, if the MFSW has 2 wires for heating
it has thermostat built in the actual heating circuit(element).

You could very easily verify that by applying 12V supply and monitor the current consumption at the same time.
Probably bench PSU(with V & A display) would be the easiest.
By holding your hand on the wheel you should sense the heating and at the point of "max" temperature your current consumption should drop to zero.
And then when the temperature of the wheel drops to "min" the current consumption should resume.

The kind of down side of 2 wire heating is fixed temperature (oscillating with hysteresis characteristic of its thermostat).

The heating on 4 wire MFSW has 2 independent circuits. One for heating element only and the other one for thermistor.
In this setup the wheel temperature can be controlled and adjusted very precisely to any level as per the driver's preference.

But the limit is the clock spring tape!
So far I have found only spring clocks with 2 paths tapes for heating so my thermistor will be most likely redundant.

I could use PWM and by experimenting I should find 2 or 3 set poins (heating levels).

What clock springs have you found that have the capability ?
I looked at a couple (like the golf 8 my wheel came from) and the ring seems to be part of the stalks so no good for my 6.1
 
I didn't explore T6.1 setup but on T6 there seems to be no direct replacement of the spring clock unit.
My current plan is to extract heating tape from the donor and add it to my original unit (6R0 959 654).
Yes 2 tapes wound on top of each other.

So far it appears that 5Q0953569B is going to be the best donor of a heating tape and associated connectors.

How you getting on this ? I the same clock spring from a B8. I want to find someone to print a new 3d face plate.

My other idea is to use a hole saw to cut out the 2 pin socket on the donor then use the hole saw to cut a hole in the original then glue the two parts together

What do you think Robert?

I am thinking more less about the same thing. No progress yet though as I am trying to do probably too many things at the same time :p

I will try my best to precisely document my conversion and share with you all.

It's something that I hope to eventually do with my van one day, I had a Ssangyong Rexton a few years ago with heated steering wheel (and, strangely, heated rear seats, I've never seen them in anything else since) and it spoilt me!

Chinese Passat on a PQ platform has heated rear seats :whistle:

I’ve got a 2012 Audi A3 with heated front and rear seats! I didn’t even know they were an option until after I bought the car second hand.
 
Having a play with my 6.1 and got this to appear, may just be that us 6.1ers have a way of controlling this built in ??
As is always typically the way I need to get packing and heading off tomorrow and no time to play/investigate but looks promising !

I enabled it in adaption channels, there’s 2 or 3 I need to have a play with but looks like at least there’s an option if I can figure out where the output should be and if the pin is present ??
 
Found a few hours tonight to start having a play with mine, got my MK8 Golf R wheel fitted and working then started having a play with the heated function

1 step forward 2 steps back !!

I don’t want to derail this thread so think it might be better if I start a separate one for 6.1 heated wheel as the two are very different and don’t think either will help each other, when I make a bit more progress I will start a new thread and link it here for an easy find
