The Sandwich Van. My T6 project

Yes you can buy black seat belt buckles, I have them. Got them off ebay, pics in my thread
do you have a link to the thread i tried to look but couldn't find it.

Could it be as simple as rattle can of satin/matt black paint for the brackets?
I've seen a few threads on painting plastics to maybe ill give that a punt, its just weather the belt rubbing ruins it too quickly.

I think it'll be fine of you remove it and give it a bloody good clean. the runner section probably wont need painting - i think its stainless steel bar maybe

So a cheeky mid week update, not having lights in the back that i could control easily was starting to be a bit frustrating so I decided to make a mount up for my remote and source a second one. I picked up a 3d printer last week so this seemed to be a perfect opportunity to fire it up and make something simple, that and a pre made design online and i was cooking on gas. as for a second remote luckily it looked like the roof company used a pretty common setup so sourcing a second set was quite easy.

So its time for another small update, in the week i picked up a Forty Winks bed and matress off another forum member to tie me over until I can do a full conversion. I have to say its nice having a full size bed and there is still plenty of boot space. I also finally got around to connecting my rear lighter socket to the new fuse board so I can buy a powered cool box.

Fitment wise they are really straight forward picking up all standard fixing points and it took about 10 minutes to fit.

Here is it all set up.

We even decided to have a little trial camp in it at my parents to see how much of a mess camping with a newborn would be and I have to say he loved it, wasn't too bad at all so ill try and get some trips booked.

So another little update. I decided to do a test camp at the weekend in the van with the wife and newborn in tow.

I quickly realised wind deflectors would probably be a good idea and light switches are your friend so I’ve ordered some deflectors and a few spare remotes for my lights and fitted another by the back door.

IMG_1555.jpeg

The fir tree clip is a little short so I’ll see if I can find some extra long ones but it’s gripping for now.

I’ve also got my wind deflectors fitted which being heiko ones was super straight forward

Just those two bits of sticky back plastic and a couple of push in clips.

You might want to get some extra clips from ebay, the Heiko's have a habit of falling out after a while!

Especially on the side that is parked towards the sun, the sticky bits can be affected.

Thanks for the tip I put two extra in as I had a couple but I’ll order some more

So i spent a little more time last night and wired in a battery indicator and extra USB socket using some parts i saw n another build thread on the forum. im pretty pleased with how it turned out its handy to be able to know the leisure battery is charging ok.

That’s it all in with the seat pocket re attached.

Right so I’ve been a bit lax on updates recently. I managed to pick up a compressor cool box and take the van on a little trip which was fantastic. I have to say it worked great even in its current setup and there are definitely advantages of having a full width bed. The only real snag is the lack of room between the kombi seats and front seats means you can’t really use that space.

Here is a little pick of the old girl in wales

IMG_1751.jpeg
As for the next steps, I’ve also managed to pick up a few more bits. I managed to pick up a
Planar heater so tested that from a Jerry can to see how it worked and think about how im going to fit it. That’s going to be fitted when I sort the rock and roll bed so probably a little while off.
IMG_1680.jpeg

The other things I noticed were the headlights are really poor and the Speedo was out since swapping the tyres so I’ve picked up some 200% bulbs until I can justify LED Headlights. I spent some time following the guides on here and re-calibrated my Speedo. For anyone who hasn't its a really simple process with VCDS, one difference can be seen below and was that mine listed vehcle names as well as numbers where as others just has 1-8
IMG_1859.jpeg
to correct the error I had I dropped it from Setting 4 to 3 and that left me with a bang on Speedo. The bulbs I’ve popped in but not tested in anger.

Well I finally managed to make a start on the winter changes. the plan is to go for a full camper conversion this winter. I found the lack of space in front of the kombi seats a little awkward so I've gone for a cali bed on rails. I'm torn between keeping the units at the back low so i can have a full width bad that just narrows for our feet or keep the cabinets high for more storage.

here are a few pics of this weekends work. I mostly followed the guide on the uberbus website but being a factory kombi most of the strengthening was in. I've put as much detail as I can below as I struggled to find much of use.

So that's the flooring stripped out and the Kombi Brackets Exposed, its worth noting on a factory Kombi only the outside seat mounts had strengthening plates and the rest were covered by strengthening plates under the floor.

IMG_6767.jpeg

The next job as the strip the underneath of the van, if anyone if looking to do the rails you need to drop the tank and strip all the heat shields, and undertrays to be able to access the bolt positions.

IMG_1992.jpeg

This was the rails dropped in place, they fit in two factory grooves on the floor and helpfully 3 bolts line up with the factory Kombi holes in the floor and use the same strengthening plates.

IMG_1994.jpeg

As the tank was out I also took the time to fit the stove pipe for the diesel heater, this was the only shot i got but my sender seemed different to those I had seen on line and didn't have any markings indicating where to drill.

50074EDF-A5B7-4B30-AF5C-21C0785E2234.jpeg

This was the rails in place, you cans the the original holes in the floor across the van. to find the position of the third rail i drew a square line through the original holes to position it length ways and then spaced the rail 670mm from the closest rail before measuring for square. ill pop up some more exact measurements before I get the floor in.

IMG_1996.jpeg

Below the van i mostly used either cut double kombi seat brackets, the stock kombi seat brackets and the ones in the picture below. the drill holes fall through factory positios in the floor pan so that helps you know your on the right track. The passenger side one already had the hole drilled for the rivet, on the drivers side/ cenrte rail i had to trim this down as it was a little tall and drill for the rivet. IMG_6771.jpeg

That was the seat in and tested, it all works well I will need need to trim it to get it to go all the way back, that's pretty well documented but it has a pretty good range as is. Its worth noting to fit the seat I removed the passenger seat and B pillar trim and un bolted the drivers seat and pushed it right forward. You also seem to need the rail cover's on to make it works, i think with a second person it would have been more straight forward as its a big lump to guide into place but it was manageable with a few choice words.

IMG_2002.jpeg

I still need to finish tidying up under the van and fit my diesel heater. I'll get some more photos of the bolt positions

IMG_6773.jpeg

That's as far as i managed to get so far. i still need to make up a floor and replace the rail covers as these are a little tired. if anyone has the part numbers for those that would be awesome.

So this weekend i managed to get another few steps forward on this, I ordered up a sheet of 10x5 ply and traced out a new floor to fit above the standard Kombi mat then went about wiring in the steps and trimming the internal panels to fit.

Overall I'm really pleased with how its came out, the bed seems to work really well and I have plenty of head room in the back.

That was the van all claread out, I also took the time to sound deaden the floor which is probably excessive but I had some left over.

IMG_2036.jpeg

then I marked out the mat and cut for the channels, I could the best way was to use an angle grinder, it was a little slow but gave a nice clean cut.

IMG_2035.jpeg

This was the mat in and cut, I used some of the off cuts to fill the holes from the kombi seats and tie downs but to be honest I'm sure the 12mm ply would have bridged well.
IMG_2038.jpeg
Templating was fairly simple really, I used the rubber floor which with the soft sides is helpfully larger than the floor at the normal level, then added some extra bits where the kombi step differed, this was then trimmed to fit through a few attempts to give a tight fit.

IMG_2032.jpeg

Luckily I managed to rope my old man into lifting duties.

IMG_6782.jpeg

Once this was done, I cut the rails into the ply, which took a little more careful marking and needed relief cuts as the rails stick above the rubber towards the back of the van.

IMG_6786.jpeg
The relifs can be seen here, it shows how much longer the rails are than the cutouts and where the ply needed to be thinned to allow it to sit flat.

IMG_2042.jpeg

This was the seat all in, and it fits nicely with the steps from a Caravelle. These had the benefit that I got some fancy lights to wire in, and I must say I'm really pleased with the results.

Well I managed a little more time on the can this morning. All of my leisure battery parts had arrived, bar a batter so I thought I’d spend a bit of time getting the front end stripped ready for wiring.

The comfort dash centre console was a bit of a pain as there was no guide or how to I could find showing all the fastenings. But I managed to get it out in the end. The issue was I had to remove the wine cooler to expose the last fastenings.

Once the seats were clear I pulled the factory carpet out and started cleaning and sound deadening.

I sadly ran out of time so re gutted the handbrake assembly for now and will do the rest in the week.

The last bits I need to do are around the drivers footwell. A little fiddly but if your patient it goes on well
Did it make a big difference doing the cab floor?

Did it make a big difference doing the cab floor?
it is hard to pin it on an individual thing. but i’d say the cab floor and the rear arches made quite a difference. i have done under the rear floor but to be honest the mat did a good job. i’d say the rear arches make an awful lot as they are fully bare but overall the van is noticeably quieter with it all done.

that said he cab floor was time consuming

Thanks for the reply. I'm doing mine as I go. Doors done, scuttle, roof. I've ordered carpet so will do more as I carpet panels etc.

Erm like you say really, on their own not much....combined all adds up. Worth doing though I'd say
