Just received the knock back....Betty does not look enough like a motor caravan on the outside. The only box not ticked was a high top. But the form does say a combo of the external features are needed. is there an appeals procedure?

Thanks for the link, a good read but only tells us what we already know and again doesn't define how PC plod would interpret the law when he has a speed camera on you. Don't kow if static cameras can define a vehicle, I think its the mpr type.
I think if you was unfortunate to get a speeding ticket for over the 50, 60, range and took it to court, then you may get off if you have all the evidence of your van being a convert to a the Motorhome specs.
I don't know of anyone at the moment who has done this so I await any such outcome while I'm going to stick, whimp, to the 50, 60,70 rule simple because I wouldn't want the hassle of a court case.
I'm sure many others are the same.

I agree, good informative read but doesn’t move us away from the fact that an automated ANPR system will (if not successful in having DVLA recognise your pop top as a camper) still apply van speed limit enforcement if you are unfortunate enough to forget the differing speed limits between van and campervan. I still think that any policeman worth his salt would acknowledge the change if I were ever in the situation where the argument arose, but automated systems not a hope in hell other than going to court to argue it out.

I know it refers to motorhomes but follow this link for news on VED increases: Motorhome tax reversed
All we've got to do now is get them to change their mind on re-registering our non-high top camper vans (some chance but we can all live in hope!!).

On the question of insurance, I have a t32 kombi LWB which I have insured with Admiral. We are only doing a day van conversion as we didn't want the furniture and kitchen, but insurer happily covered as a part conversion for only £30 more than a van! So not getting a camper v5 not an issue on insurance cost for us

My insurers were happy to cover it as a camper and not interested at all on what was on the v5

Hi, a little help required re the V5. I have recently received my V5 from the DVLA for my T6 which was converted to a campervan by a local company. He sent the docs off with photos etc as per changes to the use etc of the vehicle and the returned V5 in my name just states the Van as a VAN/SIDE WINDOWS?
I spoke to a guy at DVLA and he said because there is no significant changes to the outside of the van then that's why its not been amended to Campervan???
Does your V5 for a conversion state CAMPERVAN. The guy/ firm who converted the van has said this hasn't happened before so it seems I will now have to try and resubmit details to get the body type changed to Campervan. Suggestions please.

Mine was re-classified as a van with windows but also as a MPV

Hi mate, the van was a panel van.

My conversion as follows;

30mm vw sportline springs
Side windows
Fully insulated and carpet lined
Full width RIB seat bed (now a 6 seated vehicle) MPV
Blackout curtains

Basically it is a Kombi, but it is predominantly used for camping. I have a slimline J Rail fitted in the roof where the roof bars would be. Use this to couple up the drive away awning.

Insurance company fine with it and is classed as a Motor Caravan for insurance purposes as this is what it is used for.

No pop up top, fridge, cooker or sink

Hope this helps

Just to say purchased a Bilbos Celex register new on the 07/10/2019 based on T30 window van Registration document shows Motor Caravan category M1 ?

Just shows the inconsistency of the DVLA.

When I posted my photographic evidence to them, I stated in a letter that the vehicle was now not a van and should be re-classified as an MPV, which they did.

Does anybody know what actually constitutes an MPV? I ask as my application for the change to Motor Caravan was declined last year (as reported above) - I think it meets all the requirements except for the high top roof and that's what did it for the DVLA. I do however have belted seating for 5 (1 + 2 front and 2 on the folded Evo Smart Bed in the back).

@Handyman , are you now hoping to do the higher 60/70, single/dual carriageway speed limits, rather than 50/60, single/dual carriageway, van speed limits?
Are you still taxed as a panel van?
Apologies re. so many questions, but this is a thread with many interested folk, who have more questions to ask than the DVLA really answer!!

I would be interested to know the benefits of reclassifying as an MPV. Also what evidence did you send to get the reclassification done? ThankS.
