What Have You Bought Today?

@kurienp - Here you go. If you need anything else, just shout. Are you contemplating a possible modification? I considered it but am not smart enough to tell whether cutting away the necessary piece of plastic would damage the structural integrity of the rack! I suspect I'll just live with it as is.View attachment 100373View attachment 100374View attachment 100375
Thank you @Ayjay . That is a lot of interference indeed. With the 928, if I wanted a bit more clearance, it was just a case of using longer retaining cables which can be purchased from any hardware shop. It is easy. As you very rightly mention - cutting parts may compromise the structural integrity of the carrier. That will not be advised.

If you don't mind please, one more pic - of the hinge mechanism if possible - where the tilting rack joins the lower tow bar bracket. If we can get it to tilt another 10 or 12 degrees, the tailgate should clear.

@Ayjay , ignore my request. See this in your pic. Don't think there is much flexibility there in extending or tilting it more :(

@kurienp. For what it's worth, when the rack is dropped onto the tow ball, there's a little bit of movement in it until you lock it down. Although I doubt if it would be enough 'extra tilt' to enable opening the tailgate, it's a bit of a moot point anyway as you can't lock the handle down unless the rack is more or less level. If you leave it unlocked and handle up, the handle gets in the way of the tailgate. Does that make sense?

@Ukfozzybear. Thanks for the suggestion - mine's a Westfalia Detachable but I'm not aware that they make such thing. It would be nice but......

I had a look and my only thought was maybe try one for a different vehicle.
Maybe see if you can compare yours to say something like an x5 or a discovery something with a higher mount point.

It won't be under great load those racks can take 45kgs max.

@Ukfozzybear. I would be very happy to be proved wrong here as you seem to speak from a position of knowledge but I have to say that I was under the impression that Westfalia only produce one version of the vertically detachable tow ball (or whatever it's called). Different fitting kits for different vehicles, yes but the actual tow ball no. Also, you're wrong about the about the load limits for my cycle rack which, as mentioned above, is a Thule EasyFold XT2 - it's specced at 30Kg per bike with a 60Kg maximum.

@Ayjay you're right, we are agreeing :) I'm just wondering if a hitch for a different model would help get the clearance you need when you use the bike rack.
My suggestion was to see if you know anyone with an x5 etc with a Westfalia removable hitch and try it in yours.
As you say different fittings for different vehicles. Resulting in different ball heights or even distances away from the back of the tailgate.
Edit the t6.1 version looks to have a longer reach or I maybe just imagining it!

The nose weight of your hitch is 100kg and the max your bike rack can take is 60Kg so all well within tolerances. Hope that helps.
