If you drive short journeys in town, and carry a load, then 24mpg is probably on the money ....

What happens if you go on a long run and keep under 70 mph?

Mine always does 600 miles per 80L tank mainly motorway, something not right with that sort of mpg even with a 70L tank. @RattyMcClelland had similar problems but can't remember if he fixed this by replacing part of his fuel system that broke, don't think he's on here much these days.

I have a 150 DSG Kombi with factory 17inch wheels and get just over 500 miles per tank on mixed roads. It has covered 11,500 miles and is used as a camper but I do not carry lots of weight.

I got well down into the red today with only 30miles range remaining and was surprised that I only managed to get 63l into the tank. I though the tanks were 70l ?

Hi Pete,

Yes your absolutely right. I’ve been private messaging Ratty as I had found some threads of his with the same issue.

He said that he replaced the the DPF sensor which didn’t have any affect. It sounds
Like he’s learnt to live with the poor consumption.

I’m running 20inch wheels, but don’t carry a lot of weight either really.

Didn’t get a chance to ring VW today but will tomorrow

long term average in my 150 manual pv is 36mpg, mainly motorway miles at higher than average speed.

I have a 150 DSG Revo re-mapped Caravelle Exec that runs from light to regularly heavily loaded.

Typical around town 34 and short journeys around 37-38
Longer runs on mixed roads it can top 41.

Filled up earlier and the range said 550

I have learned to change my driving style and I use the Coasting function a lot and I am not a slow driver, just anticipate the traffic in front to minimise breaking and accelerating. I also only use Premium fuel

Hope this helps

I'll copy what I said to Paul in PM's as it may be helpful. Also I think people need to say weather they have a 70 litre tank or an 80 litre tank. I have a 70litre tank and get around 380-400miles to a tank or around 58-62litres before I refill. Also if dsg or.manual as dsg boxes are more economical it seems. I'm 6sp manual.

"Unfortunately that's how it's going to be.
I am approaching 60k in my van and I have recorded every single fill up on the fulley website. It's average over 60k is 28.7mpg. Best was 31.9mpg on a road trip to Scotland and worst at 22mpg with a faulty dpf pressure sensor which caused the van to stay in regen mode for a full tank.
Driving the van hard and sitting at 70mph on motorway I average 27/28. Driving like miss daisy and being very careful and sitting at 60mph I can just scrub 30mpg.

It's just crap and I can't wait to go electric on the next van (Id buzz cargo, I'll save £16k in fuel over 4 years on night time electric charging. That's huge.)

Ignore anyone who says the engine will run in after 10k and it will improve. It's not the 1970s. Engines are run in after a few hundred miles nowadays and if looked after stay the same. Mine has been consistently poor since day one. Compared to my Euro 5 t5, same roads, same load, same tyres I got 35mpg average and 40mpg if careful over 120k miles."

I will add. My high pressure fuel pump failed. VW wouldn't fix under warranty because of remap (fair enough) however them having the van for 3 weeks to tell me that was much worse than the £7k they quoted to fix it.
In the end I went to my local trusted brother in laws garage in market harborough, new hp fuel pump, complete injector flush and test, complete fuel line flush, new timing belt and water pump etc for £2k all in.
Zero difference in fuel economy after.

At least the fuel economy is consistently bad.

On the up side. I have a 660cc Honda s660. They will do 35mpg......on a track day and back. 58mpg every other time.

There's nothing above that I haven't read on here dozens of times. The fact is the VW Transporter is not the most efficient commercial vehicle in it's class. Some get good mileage, some get not as good, but think its poor, when in reality they are all just average for a van depending on how we drive, what mods we've done and what power we own.
If you want something that's fuel efficient, buy a Vivaro, because my old 2015 Vivaro was far more efficient. The drawback is simple, they are crap. They fall apart, depreciate faster than a luxury car, spend more time fighting the dealers for warranty issues and look chod. I don't suspect any of the other commercial manufacturers are much better either.

It's just one of those things in life, compromise.

These reports of new vans and poor economy makes me wonder what all the gadgets in and around the engine are actually doing .... not saving fuel for sure

80lt tank, 6 speed manual, 180 bi-tdi remapped to 215. I regularly hit 550 as the fuel light pings on, and a lot of those miles are towing a trailer with two boats and their associated kit.
I think there can equally be a difference in fuel return between the E5 and E6 engines.
Best fuel return for me (posted on here somewhere with a picture of the mfd) was around 650 with tank on zero range.

Remember that we are driving what is basically a 2 tonne (often more) rectangular brick that makes no attempt at all at being aerodynamic. It's never going to be great on fuel consumption.

I'm in a euro 5, T32, 140 manual 6 speed, remapped to 170. A 50/50 mix of motorway and rural A/B roads. 70mph on the motorway and pretty quick on the A/B when you can (which is often as I'm on the road at 5am), but I get up to speed gently, no real hard acceleration. I'm averaging about 575 miles per 80l tank, but I can get that a lot lower if I drive more aggressively, I just choose not to, unless I'm really in the mood for it.

True, however my argent is why was my Euro 5 t5.1, same loads, same roads, same tyres/wheel, same fuel, getting 35-40mpg over 150k and the euro 6 t6 struggles to better 29mpg.

I have a 180 T5.1 work van & a 204 T6 full camper conversion. Both are 4mot DSG & t32. The T6 is 2950kg on the weighbridge. They are both very sensitive to the right foot, just 5mph can make 10mpg difference & that’s when they’re both in 7th gear. I can get the T6 to deliver over 40mpg, the best I’ve had is 44mpg. I regularly get 600 miles between fill ups, the best I’ve done is 720 miles. That’s on the motorway with the ACC set at 56mph. So it can be done. I’m not particularly slow, but I am steady. I have the ACC set to maximum distance & ECO acceleration.
