Evening folks just bought my first t6 2.0 tdi dsg 2016 camper van set the trip on putting £20 in and it’s only managed 70 miles ! This is driving to work and back steady away . Is this the norm or does it need looking at ?
It makes a big difference where you are driving. We got over 40 mpg (checked as tank to tank fill) when driving sedately 65-68 on motorway for long drive.
Then on twisty A roads with lots of change of pace and load it drops to low 30s.

I found the MPG gets better after a tank or two driving with very little throttle. Normal driving I get about 360 miles on 63 litres careful driving 550 miles, the van does less regens which has a big effect. Am carrying a lot of weight with wider tyres which also effects fuel use.

On a flat straight road my vans GPS speed is approx 5.7% slower than the indicated speedo reading.
That error needs to be taken into account when calculating MPG.

My experience is that the on board display is consistently optimistic .... by about 5%

You put twenty quid in and it only lasted 70 miles?
That's not scientifically very useful, it's best to fill it to the brim, do say, 400 miles, fill it to the brim, work out diesel use and miles, hey presto, you have a number called MPG that you can compare with other people and other people can comment on.
Many people run around with the fuel gauge in the red all the time, but the dpf won't regenerate if there is less than a quarter of a tank so it's not a clever thing to do in the long term.

Yeah I never let any vehicle go into red and fill up every time. Totally ran out of fuel once as a 19 year old, never again!

After about 2 years of ownership with a 204 4m dsg with pendle remap and running summer + winter tyres my average mpg is 34,mainly motorway at about 80mph.

So I’m 2500 miles into my new 6.1 and it’s averaged 42.5 mpg across the whole 2500 miles.

Best run I’ve had was 200 miles of motorway when I got 53mpg, but much of that was in 50 and 60mph roadworks. Worst was up and down hills in Wales with loads of gear changes and some very steep gradients, and was around 27mpg over those miles. 300 miles back from Wales today, mainly 70ish on motorways and still got 43mpg.

I‘ve done end to end calcs on fill ups and the onboard info is actually a shade under real world mpg in my case.

Mine is a 150 manual SWB with a full camper conversion and pop top, so not light. Always use Millers additive when I fill up. Overall pretty impressed with the mpg and was expecting it to be more in the 30’s.

Evening All,

Could I ask what sort of diesel usage you are getting from your vehicles? I have a 2018 T6 (T32) 2 litre Kombi. I'm concerned about the digital fuel gauge and how it reports.

I put some diesel in today - only £30 - but enough to show 225miles on the digital gauge. I travelled around 30 mile round trip today and it fell rather quickly. By the time I got home the gauge was down on 130miles left. A fall of 95 miles.

I'm not one that hammers their van and keep it below 2k revs. It's a 6 speed box. I've checked the tyres and they are at the correct levels. I've also checked the oil and all seems ok - but I did top it up the other day.

This has been worrying me for a few weeks now so thought I'd ask on here. The mpg clock says 34.9mpg - but how accurate is that? Do people ignore the digital gauge? Is there any way to turn it off and just depend on the analogue gauge?

Thanks everyone,

Gareth

Have a search on the Forum, there are several very long fuel consumption discussions already running.

I've never done the proper maths but my on board mpg averages 30ish with 38osh achievable on a long run.
Thats a T32 dsg LWB 140

An analysis of MFD fuel consumption display behaviour can be found here:

Mines not bad until it regens, that kills it. Also the onboard computer is very rarely correct.

I get around 30 mpg on short runs and up to 40 on long runs.

the trip computer is eternally optimistic , so I do full to full calculations the long way

I’ve done a 162 mile round trip today to North Wales 110 T6.1 Startline Kombi conversion with 700 miles on the clock and the onboard computer shows 33.5 mpg, I know the engine will be tight and the mpg will improve the more miles it does.

John.

That's not bad at all.

I get an average of 34. Worked out from tank to tank calculations on a spreadsheet (I love a good spreadsheet) in my 2017 T6 Caravelle with AT tyres on which I'm very happy with.

I've just done 1000 miles to the south and back to Scotland using the motorway with cruise control as much as possible set to 62mph and only got 33mpg on my T32 150ps van with just camping gear in it. I thought it should have been much better on a 15000 mile engine.

Run to Spain and back 1912 miles mainly motorway and peage at 35.6 mpg. Happy with that.

2017 T6 204DSG with winter tyres.
