Where Have You Been In Your Van Today?

Camping La Bien Assise 20 minutes away from Euro Tunnel. This is 19th and final campsite (all ACSI) ending 71 consecutive nights sleeping in the van touring Spain and France. It’s by far the longest trip we have ever done. We did not book a single campsite or use any tolls and we were largely guided by weather forecasts plus a few locations we definitely wanted to see. It’s been fantastic but also looking forward to having some home comforts :)

Sounds amazing well done. Maybe one day when / if I get to retire!

We've now left Carcassone and am on a slow and probably circuitous return journey to Calais. There was a music festival on in Carcassonne over the weekend and tonight they have got BOB DYLAN appearing in what I think is quite a small open air theatre for somebody like him to play (that's The Bob Dylan, the 102 year old US troubadour). Fortunately, neither of us are particular fans of the man so we couldn't be arsed to stick around for the gig! We're now pitched at Camping Chez Grendon for the night which seems to be a nice quiet site in the middle of vineyards and not much else for €17 per night. Thankfully, the temperature at the moment is about 10°C less than the late 30s that we've had since last weekDSC00781A.jpg

Thats one of our favourite locals! Great walks and cycling to RSPB Minsmere and the marshes and on to the sea. Have a great stay !

We've stopped at Camping Les Portes de l'Anjou in Durtal for the night - It's a great site on the banks of the Loire that we've stopped at before and is only €16 pn. Durtal is a lovely town but being in France and a Monday, it's absolutely dead and nothing (except a pizza takeaway) is open tonight. We're due to be back through the tunnel next Monday and are heading to Normandy tomorrow and can't decide whether to bring the ticket forward to Friday or book a return for later next week - we've decided to check out weather reports tomorrow and then make a decision.DJI_0050.JPG

A quick visit to a very crowded Omaha Beach on the way to our next campsite. We were aiming for Camping Riva Bella in Ouistreham but arrived only to find the it was closed. We therefore drove a few more Km to Camping Salinas in Colleville Montgomery where we are staying for two nights. TBH, first impressions are that it's not much to write postcards about but it will do in a pinch. Our pitch is one of three in the middle of some mobile homes / shacks most of which are unoccupied at the moment. Not long after we arrived, a German motorhome pulled in next to us and shortly after that, a Brit couple in a black/grey two tone California parked on the other side of us (I always think that the cali electric pop top is just being flash as I struggle to put mine up and down manually). The real problem with this place is that there seems to be a total absence of restaurants within walking distance but more research is required!DSC00783.JPGDSC00784.JPG

This is our first French holiday since 2019, have found a distinct change in campsites. Loads more statics, second site that has virtually no water taps, the last site in Normandy I could only find 1 tap after searching for 20 minutes. Seems site's that were once independent or part of Les Castels are now Yelloh or Sandaya, current site is nice but after speaking to a few brits the feeling is they are not what they used to be. Another consequence of covid????

We arrived at Camping La Bien Assisse earlier today - for some reason we've never actually stayed here before but I suspect it will feature in future trips as it's a very nice site with good facilities and an on site restaurant and takeaway that both have good reviews. We came here via Calais as I wanted to check out the potential of another site for future trips - Camping du Fort Lapin actually looked pretty good on a short walk around it and has the added attraction of being a stroll into Calais centre ville (albeit quite a long stroll!). We were also pleasantly surprised by the town itself as we both expected it to look a bit run down after seeing various reports on line. There seemed to be plenty of eateries open and a couple of our old favourites were still doing good business but those impressions might have been influenced by a comparison to our last stop (Ouistreham, aka 'City of the Dead'). We were also lucky enough to see this chap strutting his funky stuff along along the sea front:DSC00788A.jpg

I forgot to mention that we were passed on the Motorway about an hour outside Calais by a two tone T5 with the front of the pop top open at least 5cm. We were doing about 75MPH as they passed us and I reckon the wind noise in the cab must have been horrendous so they must have known that something wasn't right. I made a mental note of the time and just found the movie clip on my rear camera to take a screen shot but it suffers a bit from being cropped so much - the dark line is the gap and NOT a shadow or the rubber 'spoiler!
