Hi @Jim tunney and welcome

This is a big and widely discussed topic - lots of different views.
18's are probably the easiest and safest bet and there's a lot of options, just depends what you're looking for. Just make sure that you get wheels and tyres that are suitably load rated.

I've just gone from 18" Sportlines (with a 30mm Sportline Suspension Drop) to 20".

The ride is a tad harsher but feels a lot more sure footed.

The Wheels are specifically made for the Transporter so do not have any spacers / adapters like you'd need for Range Rover, BMW etc. Wheels.

The Wheelarches are now 'full' & the Van looks a hell of a lot better.

Not sure what problems you have read about, just make sure you buy the correct load rated Wheels & Tyres.

Running 19s and in my opinion they are a great compromise between wheels being too big and too small.
Mine are 8.5" all round ET45 on a 30mm drop and works perfectly for me giving good looks and a comfortable drive.

I'm changing for a different set soon, and they will also be 19"

Just watch the load rating on the tyres as mentioned.

If had 16's,17's,18's 19's & 20's.

It all depends on Tyre size and Tyre choice.
I run 20's. 25k miles a year. Love it.

I'm awaiting my new t32 204 swb DSG in indium grey......

I want to swap Devonports...

I don't want 20" as I don't want a hard ride (work vehicle) so left with the choice of 18" or 17".

If I go for 17" I can use existing tyres. Is it worth taking the plunge and going for 18" bearing in mind I'll keep the van for a while?

I want black wheels basically. I have been toying with powder coating my originals black (see previous thread) but now going off the idea. There is too much surface area, not spokey enough to look good in black.

How far does the extra 1" go??

I had 17" on the previous works van.

Now i have the 18"

There fairly similar in ride quality as the tyre profile offsets the difference in that one inch.

It's the suspension that make for the hard ride . . . . . Ie sportline spring set Etc.

So my take is that it's just personal opinion and what you like the look off.

Bloody Nora... don’t let @Tourershine see those wheels in that condition

IMO it depends on the height of your suspension and having the same ratio of wheel arch gap to tyre wall so it looks balanced.

I spotted them the other day on a different thread but refrained from saying anything

Lol..

Sorry guys..

It's a work van mon-fri .... so sometimes it gets a battering.

I'll try my best this week end.

I went from stock 17” on I think 215-65-17 at about 55psi to 18” Sportline on 255-45-18 at 40Psi

It was a great improvement allround. Also like you us d as a work van sometimes fully loaded but generally with around 400kg in the back of a T32 Kombi. Ride when empty with stock 17” wheels and tyres was very spacehopper like.

I have just swapped to 20” and not yet convinced its for me, need more time in it yet. But I did find that the actual ride was not affected that much and I hardley notice the difference on 275-40-20 so lost of rubber still. However the feel is totally different to drive. Feels heavier, dulled the performace and general not a ninble. If you can call 3tonnes nimble.

I was chosing between 18 and 20” and the whole process was a minefiled and very mind boggling.

If chosing again and playing safe I would go 18” but 8.5J rather than the 8J on the Sportlines plus an ET offset of 35 or 30 instead of the stock ET45. This, in my opinion will have a nicer looking tyre placement on the rim(less bulge) and the rim and tyre will sit 10 or 15mm wider from the vehicle giving a better stance if you’re not hardcore like most of these guys. Each to their own, fully appreciated. Not wanting to upset the 20” gang, I can see how serious some that their rims.
