AdBlue Discussion and Issues

Hello,

I have a Vw T6 2019 "New Vehicle to me" with Adblue .
When i check what is left in the tank it says Range 2500 Min 1.50-Max 2.00 gallons.
Question is: Can i top it up at any time as long as its between Min to Max gallons without any problems

Bloody horrible stuff if mine had it I would keep it topped up cause it crystallises so much can stop the sensors working when run near empty

as @ Tsixty says:
1) If you let it go too low it will go into limp mode / stop completely.
2) Don't overfill it - it confuses the sensors. Just put in what it asks for. 2.2 gallons is a convenient 10 litre tub.
3) When you do fill it, switch the ignition on and wait for 30 seconds without starting it, so it registers the fill.

I am up to approx 8000 miles, have topped it up once from new and had no problems. Fingers crossed for next time...

There are plenty of discussions on here re Adblue if you use the search function.
The search function is you friend...

I had enquired of Peter as to what year his van is - the reason being that I seem to recall a conversation somewhere where someone who seemed to know what he was talking about noted that certain model years (was it the first two years of the T6??) had a different gauge system to later ones. The later ones being the same as a Tiguan (and presumably others) which were ok with being brimmed as distinct from following the instructions in the manual, fill as instructed, wait as instructed - etc.

Is this correct?

I would add that we've never had any issues with ours (17 plate) but whether that's good luck or the result of following the instructions I don't know. Either way, I wait until it says 500 miles and put in a 10ltr container full.

My understanding is that if it runs out during a journey it will continue to run, but won't restart until it's been filled. I can't see how anyone can possibly let it run out seeing as how it nags you constantly once it's getting a bit on the low'ish side, and getting the stuff isn't exactly challenging.

My T6 was one of the very latest of its kind. It was a cancelled order and came to the dealer after the T6 order line was inoperable and presumably the T6 production ceased!

I just have to say. Overfilling for me was accidental but perhaps clumsy. I tried to follow the instructions in the handbook but the first container was not enough. I used another and misjudged. I had presumed that the container would just stop preventing syphoning in time or that the filler neck would prevent further filling just as a fuel fill might.

Just to reaffirm there where no ill effects! I believe that it is unreasonable to expect anyone to measure out exactly the correct amount. It is a routine function That is is incumbent on the manufacturer to provide a fail safe method of filling if things are so sensitive. That or provide a simple method of removing excess. Not every one fills at home with calibrated measuring cups! Many I suspect fill on the garage forecourt. Most probably when they fill up with fuel. It is not the equivalent function of an oil and filter change.

I wonder if we have same issues with log fires ? Manufacturer stated “it’s hot don’t touch “ so we did anyway just because...
When people say they are “brimming it “ is it via a pump or a 10 lire container ?

I would imagine there would be a different story for everyone. For me, in a bit of a hurry, used up one can, grabbed another expecting it to shut off. It did not. Similar thing on another occasion. I had no problems so forgot about it. At first though I thought "oooh" or something like that. It has been suggested that vehicles after a certain date seem to be OK so I am fine with that.

You’d think that wouldn’t you?

I had a member of staff who lived 40 miles away from my office, I let him travel to work and back in his company T6 without charge.

He appeared in the office at 16:55 on a Friday night claiming he only had 20 miles left on his Adblue and what were we going to do about it?

I suggested that in future he topped it up sooner (to be fair I flipped out at him for being so stupid) he went to the nearest Halfords and brought himself 10 litres of Adblue, kept the receipt and topped it up himself so that he could get himself home.

In his rush to get home and feeling very inconvenienced about the vehicle ‘suddenly’ having to be topped up he then proceeds to put 10ltrs of Adblue in his diesel tank and then when the van conked out just half a mile or so up the road he then calls me expecting somebody to drop him off another van so he could get home.

£7000 of damage and in mitigation he claimed he didn’t know what he was doing and that nobody had trained him on how to fill the van correctly.

This guy was early 60’s and had rebuilt a classic Norton from scratch, so not exactly a dizzy blonde...

Never underestimate people’s stupidity.
