For a bit of trouble shooting try this:
1) Jack up the offending front corner and hold the road wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock position and with a lot of effort push at 12 and pull at 6 and vice versa. If you get a knock that is usually a wheel bearing problem (you would hear a rumbling noise whilst driving too in most cases)
2) If there was no noise in point 1 above, then hold the road wheel at 3 and 9 o'clock position and do the push /pull exercise again. If you get a knock it is usually your track rod end.
3) Go to an empty car park, apply full lock and then without moving the steering, start driving. If you get a repeating knock, look at your drive shaft CV joints. Do this for both directions.
4) Park front wheels on top of loose sheets of plywood (one per wheel) or on grass. Without moving forwards, turn steering from lock to lock. Any pinging type noise usually points towards a sticking top mount.
5) Drive straight down a road which dips from left to tight (ie most country B class roads). If you can hear (and often feel) knocking that is your anti roll bar drop links. A pot holed road will also detect this but I'd avoid those roads for obvious reasons.
6) Drive over speed bumps so that the front suspension compresses, if you get a groaning noise, that's the wife. It could also be your anti roll bar mounts that need a bit of lube/replacing.
ps If you and your mates have just been messing with your brakes, wheels, wheel spacers, suspension struts etc, check what you have done first for loose joints and bolts, foul conditions, bits still in the box that you couldn't work out where it went...............
