Campsite costs UK

Looking into whether we can stay anyway on Saturday only and the only places that are available and don’t require booking the full weekend want £60+ a night.

The latest Caravan and Motorhome magazine (Opinion, Nov 2024) has some interesting investment costs, all of which of course have to be recouped through camping charges. New water main to a Devon site £215,000; fibre internet for reliable wifi on a Midlands site £70,000; upgraded electricity supply at Steamer Quay £130,000.

Our style of camper usage would only need a fresh water supply and waste disposal so I would always ask the question. Why spend that amount on services that I don't require? I didn't spend what I did on the vehicle to fund someone else to duplicate them!

Do what everyone else does and chose a site thats suitable for your needs at a price thats agreeable :thumbsup:

If you don't wanna pay for someone elses water , wifi or lecky make sure you have sufficient onboard :cool:

If only we had plenty of basic low priced sites in the UK, as we don't we cross the channel into France!

With 90l of water, a lithium leisure battery and solar on the roof, onboard wc we don't need a fancy camp site.

Hardly use UK sites other than camping in the forest etc. Not in either of the camping clubs, currently in Spain giving the van a last run before we sell it and when you see what's parked around us makes you wonder why the Germans, Dutch and Polish can do it but we all put up with uk sites...
Costs £160 fuel, £65 tolls, £180 tunnel, pet £99 and 9 nights free Aires or sites £100 and will be same to get home. So average £67/night which sounds a lot but for nearly 3 weeks is still cheap.

Is it just me? We have been members of both clubs for the last 20+ years and my resentment towards them actually increases year on year.

Probably best I get off the soapbox before I start ranting!!!

We’ve been members of the CC&C for years & we recovered the membership fee on ferry discounts. Now we’re both 60, we get a discount anyway, so we won’t be renewing. That said we like the certified sites, but we’ve never been asked to prove membership on any of the sites we’ve been on.

£70k for “reliable” wifi…..erm, sure, but can you stop dry-fisting me with your price plans to actually use it?!!

To be fair, we've stayed on some cracking UK campsites for under £20/night & been on some sh!tty continental sites at €40. I think that it's all down to location & capacity. Don't forget that you're comparing Europe to the UK. e.g. France has twice the land mass of the UK, for the same population. Similarly in Spain & Portugal. The UK is a very densely populated island, ergo demand is higher.

We tried;
The Caravan & Motor Home Club for the ‘23 season (didn’t renew).
The Camping & Caravan Club for the ‘24 season (and won’t be renewing).
Member discounts are a bit of a con; bringing a massively overpriced pitch price down to an overpriced pitch isn’t really a benefit.
Prices look better if you travel alone and are over 60 but otherwise not competitive.
