The remote function must be great, out for a walk, cold and wet and switch on the heater before you get back, so you return to a nice warm van!

I need to source a replacement remote for my factory diesel heater.

yep - we done exactly that.

walking back along the sea front was super windy and cold, so about 30mins away i fired it up. i felt very smug jumping in a toasty warm van.

The App is a bit Janky, but its functional.

the APP just configs a SMS hash string thats sent to the Modem via TEXT mssg.

i suppose its secure, has locked admin and user numbers, doesnt need wifi etc etc etc and works globaly in remote areas (assuming there is a phone signal)

but id love a WIFI / BT app. . . .

so I asked about a WIFI/BT box, he said there is something in the pipline from Autoterm - so wait and see.

its simple to add, its plug and play, can take a PAYG SIM and coms with a proper mobile antenna. (mines hidden above the roof lining by the B pillar)

Modem QSTART is a Plug & Play device with the ability to use Autoterm Control application on smartphone (available at Google Play and AppStore) to control any AUTOTERM air heater and liquid heaters.

Application "Autoterm Control" together with modem QSTART will let you to operate and oversee your Autoterm heater via GSM / LTE network.

Main advantages of "Autoterm Control" application:

  • Remote Start/Stop of heater
  • Start heater with pre-set working duration
  • Current status check
  • Temperature check
  • Operation settings
* Modem QSTART uses micro sim card slot

To increase wiring length from modem QSTART till control panel a 2.6 meter extension wiring for control panels (assy.4269) can be used.

The wiring length from the control panel to the modem must not exceed 10 meters.

** Please note, For Modem QSTART to be connected to AUTOTERM Air series heater a 1.8 meter control panel wire (assy.2067) must be used.

The wiring length from the heater to modem must not exceed 2 meters.

*** Please note, Modem QSTART will not work if heater is equipped with control panel PU-22.

For modem QSTART to work, control panel of the heater must be changed to control panel PU-5, PU-27 or Comfort Contro

I haven't needed to use it yet but I'm thinking about spending a week in the Loch Lomond area at the end of march so wouldn't mind it for then - only issue is trying to work out which remote is the correct one! The one I think it is, goes for £150!

It's a bit simpler than your fancy remote, just a key fob with a light that says if it connected or not. A range of about 1km under ideal conditions, apparently.

Oh a proper remote then.... With a range of 1k.... More like a pager?

I suppose that's my it's expensive.

Yeah, overall the VW factory fit system isn't as good as the aftermarket controller, there's no actual heat setting, just a scale from 1 to 10. And you can't dim the panel either, I've got can curtains so I'll just pull them if I have the heater on overnight but it'll still light up the front of the van

I've had good results with using old laptop "privacy" filters for controlling screen glare.

I used to have issues with glare from the satnav reflection on the windscreen in the XC70 and cut up a filter so it was "sideways" to kill the reflection in that direction.

It cuts down a lot of light even in the "visible" direction and is quite stiff.

Failing that you can get neutral density filter gel like this, tends to be more floppy though as designed for lighting frames

Tbh I don't know if it's the screen or the buttons or a combination of both that light everything up. I know it's impossible to sleep with it on though!

I'm thinking just a flap that drops down to cover up the entire panel would be a good solution. Doesn't look that bright but at night it really is.

Just been out in my van on the drive and thought as I'd not run the heater for a while, might as well run it for 45 mins on max as they suggest.

Temps went from 6 degrees to 17 degrees in that 45 minutes. Toasty!

And one of my vents on my kitchen points directly at my feet so I can warm up my toes if they're getting cold!

What you using for temps... Multiple Ruuvis?. How many temps you got?

Love them Ruuvi's but they're bit on the expensive side and getting the readings to storable statistics is bit complex, doable though.

This is in the planning level but little bit later in the spring I'm going to fit a Shelly Plus 1 (love Shellys too :) ). It can be coupled with Shelly Plus Addon and then it will take max 5 DS18B20 sensors - those can be had in different wire lengths. Most of the Shelly stuff is for 240V but Plus 1 is an exception that can be run with 12V regulated power. So, internet relay control of something, 5 temperature readings and additional I/O for future growth. Also being Shelly it just integrates to Home Assistant very easily.

Yeah, 3x ruuvi tags, 1x outdoor in the fuel filler door, one for inside ambient temperature and one for the fridge. All connected to the Cerbo GX (with an additional Bluetooth dongle).

Always nice to be able to keep an eye on temps, and I'm hoping to use the inside temp to trigger a window fan via the relay function at some point.

What's the additional BT dongle for?

IMO a grey water tank is a waste of valuable storage space. We usually let the water drain into a collapsible bucket/bowl (or, if appropriate, straight onto the ground). Having said that, we don't have a sink as such - just a drain for the boiling-water tap - so our water wastage is minimal.
We put diverter valve on our sink waste so we can either empty sink to 12 litre container or it can drain out the van onto the ground, drain pipe goes out though the gas drop vent, used a garden pond valve if I remember right, best of both worlds.

The Mrs was speaking with a converter company yesterday.

They was saying RIB weren't making the 120cm bed anymore.... As they weren't selling many? And that the 8cm smaller bed didn't make much difference to the sleeping.... But make a big difference to the storage space?

Problem was she didn't ask the manufacturer of the bed... Ie Reimo, RIB etc etc.

So now I need to make a list of manufacturers of the RIB style beds to I can see which one we can get.... Either the 112 or 120.

I'll start the list that I know of.....
RIB Style bed makers.

RIB
Reimo 3000

Who else?
