Discover Media Navigation software

The new van arrives soon and has the discover nav with app connect specced on it. Is it any good? I use a TomTom at the mo and the traffic info is a life saver, but built in sat navs never seem as good it seems so wanted to ask what the VW one is like? Is it good enough to replace sticking a tomtom to the windscreen and having a cable snaking its way to the cigarette lighter socket?!

Or do most folk use google maps hooked up to the iphone?

I use my disco media regularly and find it perfectly acceptable, traffic info is quick and upto date etc etc, is has several unnecessary options and can talk to you a bit too much if it senses trouble ahead, just make sure you update the map software to eliminate the postcode entry glitch
Overall it's not as simple to use as a dedicated sat nav unit but then it's not a dedicated sat nav unit I'm happy with mine and will be getting it again in my next van
As you mention you have the option of google maps etc via car play so there is an alternative if you prefer that style of interface

There's a website you can download it from it's a pretty large download though as it replaces the entire contents of the sd card circa 12-13gb

Will see if I have the link

VW_Europe
Select model/year/head unit then it gives you choice of downloads for European regions and the option to download the whole thing or piece by piece in 1gb chunks

@Pauly, does this mean once downloaded I pull the SD card out the head unit and copy it across to that then just reinsert it? Or do I have to copy it to a different SD card and plug that in 1gb at a time into the other card slot?

Instructions should be in the download area mentioned above, backup your current sd card data..

You have to download the entire thing to your computer then copy all of it onto your sd card after backing up the original contents

Well, I'm having no joy with this at all. Have been trying for a couple of days now, with overnight downloads, using VW DiscoverCare, following instructions etc but when I put the original updated VW SD card or a newly bought one in the stereo, it just asks for a suitable card? Problem is, its now wiped all the existing maps off too!
Just phoned the dealers, they reckon the VW cards are single use only and the maps can't be downloaded from the internet! What a bunch of clowns.

Ok, been on link @Pauly provided, down the bottom is customer services for help.. Clicked on it, and it gives a number of tel:0800 0833914 suggest giving them a bell, as they make the job sound straight forward!

Thanks Dave. I'm now in the process of trying to put the old ones back on either card. Just can't believe how informed and full of bs the dealers are.

Right. Got the old maps back on there so whatever happens I can still get about with directions and now in the process of 'unzipping' the file that took about 14 hours to download! Get me eh! Watch out Nasa!

I think you have to use the OE sd card or the headunit won't accept it, not 100% as haven't tried another card but think I read it somewhere

This is why I decided not to spec nav on this (or any other) vehicle.
A high end Garmin Nuvi knocks spots off it with camera and speed warnings plus free updates for life. Our old Cali nav was a clunky PITA.
To update everything; plug into a computer, wait a bit, full map and software update done.
Hard to fault but if you hate wires and want the integrated look, you need factory nav.

I decided it's not worth it.

Followed this:
https://goo.gl/8NFnDC

Extracted the FULL 7z file to the sd card.

Put in head unit after it booted up.

Menu / System / System Info / Update

Result was: as per the screen shots.

Bugg3r, I've now lost sat nav. Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong?

Pete
