Eyelets in ceiling for storing long items with bungees e.g. surf board

And these I don’t know where you get them or what they’re called but the give abit of versatility on placement

Unwin rails I believe.

I can see the Nuts at screwfix, but no sign of an installation tool? where did you all buy one from?

Thanks,

Amazon do them or look on YouTube and you can do it with a couple of nuts and a piece of bar
The guy on YouTube made the flat steel/ ratchet/ nuts etc diy installation method look easy but I found it not to be despite the fact I consider myself pretty handy! First rivnut ended up not flush and spinning slightly so had to be drilled out- what a drama :slow rofl:

Bought the cheapest rivnut tool and it was better for me…. Hated to spend the cash it I could pop them in all day long now without breaking sweat

Unwin rails are just so versatile.

I’ve got 6 rails on the floor and walls
Bloomin brilliant stuff and so easy to use and adjust to whatever you are carrying.

Nice, are these unwin rails just screwed into the ply floor? If so, what thickness ply? Secure enough that it doesn’t feel like it might rip out when cinching down the bike? I’d like to add some of these!

It's finally finished.

1. remove fir tree clips
2. drill out fir tree clip holes with 9mm bit
3. install M6 rivnuts using a big straight setting tool (the right angle ones do not have enough leverage)
4, install M6 eyelet bolts

Everything is available on Amazon

The "surf board" you see held up in the pictures using ratchet straps is actually my mountain bike. I can now go to bike fests e.g. the Malverns where loads of bikes get nicked and have the bike safely stored whilst still having use of the floor area of the van. I remove the front wheel and pedals.

Any reason you chose to use 9mm holes with M6 rivnuts rather than use the 7mm holes that are already there (with M5 rivnuts)? Wanted something more beefy?

The m5 nuts were loose in the holes. m6 nuts are snug in the 9mm holes. After drilling I painted primer around the raw edges of the new holes

Sorry for the really late reply to the thread but I really wanted to wait until I totally trimmed my roof before posting photos here you can see the system in operation, no board up yet as I am much too precious about the suede liner but as soon as I’ve gotta hit the waves I will post one of board in situ! :thumbsup:B669E599-AF06-4896-9C50-5CFE539C862E.jpeg

Brilliant post love the final result!

I've put a few M6 rivnuts in like this for surfboards and they work a treat. Does anybody know how much weight the ceiling can support like this? Contemplating hanging a couple of emtbs upside down from the ceiling with a slide out rack but obviously don't want pull in the ceiling!

Just came across this post as trawling for solutions for my new van. I did similar in my T5.1 but into the roof ribs where the factory roof panels join, so drilling the plastic trim and screwing the eyebolts through worked a treat. I would recommend using washers though as previously stated tin is a bit thin and if you pull to hard on the straps it can distort.

I can also confirm a 9’4” longboard will go up there.

Just come across this thread, one question. In a smash, or in fact , any sudden stop. What's to stop the board flying forward?
