Sorry I missed this MTB thread !!
I do fancy a fat bike just because,
Has anyone had a go on a high end electric mountain bike ?
I had a demo on one and could not stop laughing, its like someone constantly pushing from behind...

My bike shop was meant to be getting me one to demo, but I haven't heard anything yet.
They look amazing on Youtube, and all that nonsense about them being cheats bikes is garbage. Even the mags have started to take them seriously now, and as they quote, the motor assist just means you can ride longer and further.

Hey the title of the thread says MTB none of this softy road nonsense
I agree i was the one who would turn up to a road time trial in my muddy baggy shorts, show some of the Lycra clad roadies how it was done,
Wheelie across the line get disqualified then ride home !

I know I'm not outnumbered here in general.
I love the fun of a MTB and about 20% of my riding is on one, but i'm a sucker for competing with local road guys on Strava, and I find the faster pace better for me.

Still love off road when I do it though.

I see a joke in there somewhere
I don't get the whole electric bike thing ? obviously some people will benefit, but if your fit enough, why ?.

Don't forget us Road guys that actually have to put the effort into our legs, and of course the dangers of the mental bike hating car drivers that try to kill us all the time, not to mention the long ass climbs we actually hunt out deliberately.
None of this small mounds of mud and rock stuff. That's for the beginners.
I do both as well. Best road ride I did in this country was the Jurassic Beast 100. Did it whilst training for a charity ride from Oxford to Germany. Now there were some hills! Climbing up through some of the gunnery ranges was brutal.

I agree i thought they were for lazy cheats, but the technology of the batteries and motors now is on another level.
I would like to think when I am not fit enough I will still be able to get out on something.
Or dare I say it 'mod' and electric bike and go flying everywhere

Don't knock it until you've tried it. (Which I haven't yet) but my bike sales guy is a hardcore road and mtb rider and he used one for a weekend and loved it. They don't do the work for you apparently, they just make it easier to ride a lot further off road.
He said it was the best laugh he'd had on 2 wheels.

That's exactly what I mean, I think when you get to the stage of needing one to help you fulfil your hobby that's great, but the more we use our own energy surely that will keep our bones in better shape for longer.

I do like the idea of having a carbon belt rather than chain. Can’t say i have ever really thought of having a go on an electric bike though.

There are quite a few 2017 ebikes on eBay 2nd hand which either explains they are a fad, or just no good. I'd still have one for a weekend to try though.

Its the price though
Id definitely have a go just for a bit of fun, but like segways probably a good laugh but id rather walk.

We drove up to the top of the Gacier Somellier in the Italian Alps last summer and after a couple of hours driving we stopped to take some photos when a 76 your old italian gent trundled past on his electric mtb! We caught up with him at the top and he said it is massive in the alps and all old folks are getting back on these bikes and riding up mountains they gave up doing 10 years ago.

I only said I was going to try one. I do ok for mid 40s. My knees only hurt first thing in the morning but that's normal apparently.

While we are talking bikes i could do with some advise, my son has gone out and bought a dropper post for his hardtail but its a stealth type with internal cable connection but no entry into the frame for said cable, have any of you ever drilled a MTB frame to fit one of these before ?
Im not to worried about the physical drilling but cant suss out if its a good idea or not and if it is where exactly to drill the hole (well slot really so the cable can pass through and not poke out at 90 degrees) obviously away from any welds/joints but any input is welcome
