Pay Per Use Electric on site.

We're currently a mile or so away from the Busfest 3 Counties showground at Malvern and didn't have a choice over hard standing or hook up which is probably for the best.
Did anyone notice it's rained quite a lot this year so far, grass is boggy here with the water table roughly 2" below the grass, anyway on EHU so rather cunningly we've bought the electric kettle, 2 KW heater and electric blanket:geek: and yes it's spotting with rain, cold rain.
Not sure whether to give that a 'love', 'laugh', or 'sad', so ended up just giving a 'like' :slow rofl:

I guess it's just off route for the OP from Cambridge to Devon (although not for me from Shropshire) but we always use the Fromebridge Mill as our overnight stopover. No services but food available and the 'charge' is just a donation of £10 to Macmillan charity.

Putting us off our planned trip in April to UK via Ireland as looks like it's a bit of a lottery. So much cheaper here in Spain. We can only hope that our tour of Ireland camp sites cost a little less...................

Love France !!

To be fair, we've driven away from some sites in France uttering that famous Yorkshire war cry "Ow much!!". Especially down south or on the west Atlantic coast. The flip side is we've stayed on some cracking little accredited sites here in the UK for £10-12/night. It's the usual case of you pays your money & takes your choice. Our general rule is we avoid anything with more than 3 stars, you end up paying for stuff that you don't need or actively want to avoid, Kids clubs, swimming pool, entertainment, etc. All we ask of a site is a clean loo, hot shower & a quiet night. If you can avoid high season, the ACSI card is definitely your friend. Campsites are a business & they exist to make money, they can only charge what people will pay.

If you think the UK is expensive (it doesn't have to be) then you're in for a shocker in Ireland.

Now on our first UK site with Pay per Use Electric. It’s on the North Norfolk coast. I don’t have a problem with the concept at all. It was clearly stated as the way it works when we booked the site and I think the cost is reasonable at 25p per kWh unit. One selects how much credit to buy and it is said any non-use is refunded.

So at last I’m not subsidising giant Motorhomes. Great idea so long as the arrangement is clear up front.

I’m sure if you ran a site as a business you would consider a pay as you go meter system, when I worked on a site, it wasn’t uncommon to see fan heaters in awnings attached to caravans etc, I get the reason that if electricity is included, well why not get your monies worth, especially if the site are charging high pitch prices.
As we know the energy costs have increased a lot over the last few years so I think a pay as you go system is fair to everyone, these days lots of people don’t need extra electricity via a hook up, they have lithium batteries and diesel heating for a few days stop over, and those that do need a hook up, hopefully they won’t be heating the atmosphere with fan heaters

Stayed in South Devon last year similar arrangement pay-per-use electric. There was an app to pay and top up. Arrived at site, setup, plugged in EHU. Went to app no wifi so could not activate it - a right PITA as bit of hilly walk to reception (lucky still open). Stuck on £20 credit for the week, hardly used any then took weeks to get a refund.

Prefer to pay as part of pitch cost and avoid the stress.

We stayed at a site last year in Somerset which included some lecy then the rest was charged on a meter and settled up on departure. We virtually used any of the free allocation so since then I have been pro metering. Like said earlier why should I subsidise people who plug in half a curry’s store when all i want is peace of mind that the fridge won’t drain the battery if the solar can’t keep up.

I may well feel differently if I’d had to download a useless app just for this though!

We use a site in Dorset that has coin operated meters, easy and stress free as long as you have coins .
I don't wanna be downloading apps.
I can definitely see the difference in usage between our bus and our motorhome.
Bus uses next to nowt .
I'm happy to pay as we go and not just pay a fixed fee.
Too many people take the pee with 'free' lecky.

sounds interesting. . and possibly a fairer setup?

can you get loads of pics of the tariff and the EHU post so we can see how it all works.?

wow - coin meters.!

( i remember coil meters on the TVs and electric box at home, and Coin parking metes)

that's interesting - though i gotta say im now 99% cashless.

im tap-n-go, with a few bank cards (difference accounts in case of a problem with one)

i dont carry any cash, especially a stash of £1 coins - though i suppose reception could swap a card tap for coins.

then there is the security risk of the coin box being robbed.

then there is also a charge for the business to cash-in coinage to there bank, plus the cost of getting too and from the bank?

unless they are stashing in under the bed so that tax man cant see it. . . . :mexican wave:

What stops someone connecting to your electric post whilst you are out and about - sure people would not as always found fellow campers decent people but just a thought.

Interesting topic. Our new van will have an "eff off" sized LiPo battery - so I am hoping that I can pay the electric fee once every 4-5 days just to charge up as otherwise we should be EHU free.

Without delving into politics at 25 pence per kilowatt hour we're paying way too much for electric compared to the 6 p per kWh for gas.
For EVs and heat pumps to become the logical clean alternative that 25 pence is the stumbling block.
As for pay as you go electric on camp sites does that mean a £5 per night reduction on the pitch price?

We had single nights at a couple of sites in Germany in 2023 where EHUs on pitches were metered but they gave you an allowance before chasrges started kicking in. Even with boiling a small electric kettle and plugging in a small oil-filled radiator (1Kw and 600 or 700W respectively) we didn't get charged any extra at either of them but I suspect some of the giant motorhomes would have done. All in all, I reckon that's a pretty fair policy.
