A slight tangent here......but the dealer I bought my van from did the V5 owner change using the postal system rather than online and it took a couple of months for the V5 to arrive! If you are going to change plates, make sure they do it online and you'll have your V5 within a week.

I wasn't bothered about a private reg but my wife and daughter told me to stop being a tight arse and get one bought lol

Yeah agree I did everything online, only thing I had to do was sign the entitlement form and return to enable my to obtain my new V5 too couple of weeks max.

I guess one downside of personal plates is that if you drive like a clown, your registration is easily remembered for you to be reported! That doesn't apply to Audi drivers - they drive to a different set of rules to the rest of us!

I recall from a time in a past life, that DVLA specifically asked the constabulary to forward photographs of offending number plate letter spacing, in addition to issuing a ticket. It was part of a DVLA campaign, as opposed to a Police led drive. Remember your vehicles number belongs to DVLA. Not you. Your only paying for the right to display it. DVLA can withdraw that right if they take the view it's being abused.

For what my inputs worth, lettering that's not the legal standard ie italics and motorcycles with post card size plates would generally receive attention. Slightly off spacing, less so, unless the dodgydar kicked in. But although it's a collective uniform, cops generally have their own individual level of tolerance and leeway. Unless of course there's a specific crack down campaign on going. Sometimes their discretion is taken out of their hands.

However, it's worth remembering, if your van is stolen, a relevant marker is added onto the Police National Computer. Many roadside or town/city CCTV cameras using ANPR, run VRMs through this data base. So if the plate is in its proper format, it's more likely to be detected and flag up automatically, increasing the chances of a swift recovery of your beloved chariot.

Totally immature of me, but if you want a giggle, stick 'offensive number plates uk' into Google and select images......I mean some of them, we'll, just why would you?

I have my chosen 18 plate to go on my forthcoming campervan. Nothing special, except that it amused me VA18MOS. The supplier/ converter wants to put the 'standard' plate on and then I change it when I take ownership. It seems from the above thread that the change when made on line is quick and insurance change may be cost free too.

Should I be pressing the supplier to put my plate on at the start? If they don't, when it comes to all the VW on-line vehicle stuff should this all be left in the original registration or should I change this to match my displayed registration?

Lovely job Jim, but it’s not a Vee??

Always fancied a go on the six cylinder jobbie, supposed to be a stonking engine.
I love the GS Adventure so much, I’ve had them since 2010. This one is coming up for a year old.... Hmmm, I quite fancy the new TFT display screen though :D

Assuming it’s a brand new van, get them to register it with your plate from day one.

I provided the documents for my chosen ref to Hillside in plenty of time for them to do this but, with various delays in VW supply of the van, they forgot I had given them the documents and it got registered on a standard registration. Hillside were very apologetic and were willing to sort but timing was not right for me so, instead, they provided me with 2 sets of number plates, both sets having a third plate for my trailer, free of charge.

The actual transfer was very easy with DVLA (done online and given the go ahead to use the new registration in minutes) but it took about a year for VW to recognise against my chosen reg, ie. when I tried to book it into my local van centre, despite me informing VW of the correct registration as soon as I made the change over, they didn’t recognise my van until I quoted the original registration. I’m told it’s all sorted now but guess I won’t know for sure until I next book in for work.

Insurance change was free of charge as I made the change within the 14 window my insurance allowed.

Which Ducati’s Jim?
I’m looking at buying a classic Ducati as an investment, perhaps a roundcase or a 750/900 super sport from the seventies. You’ve not got a cheap one for sale have you :p:p
