Heading for Eurocamp in Normandy, two days before departure SWMBO appeared white as a sheet - daughters passport had expired - she was 9 or 10. Furious googling identified it was too late to go to Peterborough for fast track. I found one post of someone doing similar and getting on the ferry so we thought we’d try and blag it at the port, with a plan B of finding somewhere on the south coast.
Anyway, we got there and a phone call made by security, a few stern words and they let us through. As we were so early we were pulled over and thoroughly searched.
This was pre brexit and don’t think it would be possible now. Go check your passport is my advice!
We now have written on our the back page of the calendar who’s passport expires next - its not an experience we want to repeat!
For the duration of the holiday, daughter was known as the ‘illegal immigrant’!

Did exactly this DESPITE the control unit making a screaming high pitched warning sound. I remember asking my wife what was that noise warning us about? 2 seconds later a bang as the EHU came apart. Lesson learnt.Leaving for our trip away, I forgot to unplug the EHU

The family of a work colleague just had to abandon their Lanzarote holiday due to their childs passport being expired (only 5 years for kids). Cannot fast track due to safeguarding! Insurance wont pay out for expired passports so £3k+ lost :-(

In addition to passport being expired but also various requirements re how long is left on the passport by the date of the return journey, time period from date of issue, etc Not going to attempt to explain but look at the GOV.U.K website for full details. I’ve just renewed mine as the expiry date was too close to our return from Europe. A bit annoying as not getting the ten years validity. On the plus side with the digital photo access system used by Passport Office DVLA etc the renewal was easy and new passport received in less than a week from application.
Years ago we were in a campsite outside York.
A family arrived from miles away (~400 miles) and proceeded to put up a huge 10+ man tent. Until they discovered they'd forgotten the tent poles.

We'll, there's one obvious solution to that problem, but Social Services may be waiting for them when they return
