VW closes T6.1 order book today (3/3/23) !!!! - T7 Next? or T8?

And then you have it- two perfect perfect examples :) Have a drive….

Andy at THQ talks about the same reaction all the time to his T7. Personally I think VWs biggest mistake is calling it the T7 Multivan. Should have been Caravelle.

Nobody likes change - has been the same when all the variants of the Transporter came out!

My personal view is the T7 multivan should’ve been marketed/sold through the car franchises as the new ‘Sharan’ or some new moniker.

It shouldn’t have been associated with the transporter ‘T’ commercial range at all.

In isolation it’s a good design (although they balls’d up IMO by not designing it as a 7seater from day1, even an occasional one like the Sharan/Alhambra).

We ran a Seat Alhambra 7 seater for 5 years to 2017 & that was a great bus that drives well as a car.

WRT T8/Transit custom whatever it is to be, most, if not all the contractors I know (& I know many) have run current Gen Ford T-customs & berate them on build/reliability & can’t consider another. Let alone a new generation, even those that ran Fords for decades.

As contractor/commercial run abouts they prefer Vauxhall/Renault/Toyota/Fiat/Pgot, unless stuck with the Ford for various reasons.

They def wouldn’t pay for a VW badge on a Ford & aren’t dumb enough not to realise.

End of an era overall IMHO.

The newer transits are not as loved as the old 2014 version - I know a couple of people who have sold relatively new versions after searching for earlier ones without too much rust - purely because the mechanical side is way better, despite high mileages.

But… people will still pay over the odds for a VW badged transit. You know it really ;)

Getting into bed with Ford for the T6.1 replacement could be a huge mis-step by VW - it risks killing 60+ years of heritage stone-dead. Seems to me that just about all of VW's decisions right now are driven by the need to pay off/recover from the fines they received for their emissions fiasco.

I brought a new ford van in 2019, built in Turkey, owned it just over 3 years, not one issue, ever, it ran perfectly, 40k miles, it had 3 times as much kit/Tech as the T6.1, which has had recalls back to VW, just saying.
(Brought the vw to turn into a camper)

That doesn't surprise me - my Mondeo has been one of the most reliable cars I've ever owned - but I wouldn't buy a Ford to convert as a camper. To me, that's just plain wrong.

To be fair my old Sierra XR4 was super reliable- literally nothing (apart from regular servicing) in the three years I had it and was really comfortable. A drive from Leicester to London to Fort William, all in one day, no issues. Couldn’t do that in the camper and be walking comfortably the next day.
It still got 36mpg as a 2.0 petrol 4x4!
Modern cars are just bigger price tags to pay for all the advertising telling you they’re something they’re not.
Had a fiesta 1.8 diesel too. The box van version. No turbo! Was reliable and super economical if a little lacking in features.
The 2001 Mondeo was the first car I’ve had that actually had issues mid journey. Went into limp mode because of some computer glitch.
The new Transporter being built by ford doesn’t put me off in the slightest. It would seriously make me consider becoming a ford buyer again if the pricing between the two was very different.

I won’t be buying a dressed up Ford, I like VW’s and won’t be changing my T6 anytime soon.

We run a fleet of 60+ vans, at one point there were 20ish Transits and the rest VW and Merc.

The Transits were an absolute disaster, easily broken into, unreliable, hopeless dealers and worth 50p after 5 years.

At least when the VW’s go wrong our local dealer is excellent, nothing is too much trouble for them.

I don’t know what parts the new VW/Ford are sharing, but hopefully the only thing they share is the body because everything else on a Transit is crap.

Does anybody think that the resale values of our T6 / T6.1 vans will increase when production stops, in a similar way to when Landrover stopped making the original Defender?
Just a thought!
I've always looked at mine as a long term purchase and intend to run it until it's no longer financially viable, so resale value isn't a big deal to me anyway.

The 2024 Transit Custom will give you an idea of what the next commercial Transporter will be like.

Having had experience with vans that are from different manufacturers, that are essentially the same vehicle, I predict you can expect the Transit and Transporter to be almost identical, and will certainly share all the major components like electrics, engines and drivetrain, with only parts of the interior and the front styling being different.

As I've already said, Ford and VW combining these 2 vans will, in my opinion, bring to an end the 'Transporter Scene' and as has already been suggested, will lead to the market for the 'T5' platform vehicles from 2003 to 2023 strengthening in very much the same way as we now see with the LR Defender.

People were happy to pay the extra, even if from a slightly snobbish prospective, for the VW badge, but will, perhaps, now not be so quick to loosen the purse strings for a rebadged Ford Transit made in Turkey.

We have a T7 Multivan already. This is not the base for the commercial vehicle.

We’ve never known a vehicle get so much negativity. But drive one and it’ll change your mind. I really like it.
I'm fine with the look. (T7 multivan)

And I'm sure if drives superb.

Also glad it won't be the new Transporter Panel van.

But must admit I'm cringing of the thought of a ford/wv Collab.

Team Ford and Team VW are so loyal and intrenched I just can't see how we will play nice with each other in the playground.

It's a daily battle with the Transit boys on site, Vs the Transporter boys..... "Your transit is so pants you need to get slam locks fitted from day one".. "oh yeh, well your Transporter is so expensive only rich kids and electricians can afford one". . . . :slow rofl:

Oh and fwiw.....

I've been here before.

I bought a 2003 Renault Traffic van.

Aka a vaux vavaro sportive van

Aka a Nissan premistar something van...

Same van, just different front badge and steering wheel.

Had nothing but agro with it, engine wise..... Renault techs were like, "well we didn't make the engine, they did"

Lol.

Bizarrely Del, I've got nothing but praise for my 2015 Vauxhall Vivaro/Renult Trafic/Nissan Primistar/Fiat Talento which is all actually 95% Renault with an awesome Renault 1.6 140ps biturbo diesel engine.

The latest Renault Trafic is still the 'same' as the Nissan Primistar, (based on the Renault Trafic platform), and the new Vivaro is now that same as the Fiat Scudo, Citroen Dispatch, Peugeot Partner and Toyota Proace.(based on the Peugeot/Citroen platform)

That's. Good.

Mine was a 2003

2.5l DCI 140. A 5 cylinder diesel engine and at the time a new model.

Infact here it is......

My eyes hurt looking at though arches. Design team needs a slap, arches flare…wtf are these inny things.

That was my first thought to be honest - second hand might be worth more due to people wanting a ‘genuine’ VW camper.

My second thought was camper conversions ought to come down in cost as more bits might well be interchangeable?
