907 gas refill cost

@Dellmassive. I was just about to post about the price in Attwools and then saw yours! - they're actually my local camping store (a few minutes in the car). That said, I no longer use CG in the van and rely on a Cadac and 'square' stove, both of which take 'long' 227 Gm cylinders. Mind you, even when we did have the 907 in the van, I only used about half the bottle in 3 years.
gotcha. . . these.

i think we started with a (Gifted) possibly full? 907 at the End of T6F Autumn camp, as we run out of the main gas bottle.

so started to use the 907 right at the end.

and now after T6F spring camp there is only a small amount of liquid left sloshing about. . .

so I'm thinking its not going to to see us through another long weekend.

hence the sourcing of a empty 907,

and subsequent purchasing of the above full 907 bottle.

now i got two nice fresh new 907`s im wondering about an off the record redneck refill?

Older Campingaz bottles can be refilled with propane but only if it is stamped on the bottom of the cylinder but pay attention to the weight of gas listed. I think it is around 2.5kg max. I refill my own 907 cylinders from a 15kg butane Calor bottle but you MUST use a set of scales as you don't want to overfill the bottle and always refill out in the open. I bought my parts to do this from BES.co.uk | Next Day Delivery On 15,000 + Plumbing Supplies.

awsome, was just looking into this. . .

so its looks like the important this is that is got Butane in it.

versus Propane or 70/30 mix.

so are we saying here that these 907 bottles MUST only be filled with Butane.

which means re-filling from my FlowGas Propane is a no go?

hold on, what happened to the economy of scale?
Well I think you are seeing that, but not in the way that you think.

It's far cheaper to pump out a large number of use once disposable canisters for what is a very small market of consumers - so they are cheaper.

Rather than large consumers that use gas at a fair rate where it's worth the overhead of investing in more robust reusable containers along with the logistics of collecting them, testing them and refilling them.

I suspect this is the reason that an attempt was made to withdraw them - I don't think you're paying for the gas here you're paying for the collection testing and reuse.
Note: edited because it was the smaller cheaper Calor canisters that were under threat of withdrawal, memory playing up...

It's a bad situation as it encourages the at home refill option. Refilling a 907 that is at least designed to be refilled is mildly better than refilling the "designed for one use" containers, but all pressure vessels need regular testing and inspection. My miniature traction engine requires a basic pressure test every year and a full hydraulic test every 4 - a home refiller is unlikely to do this (or indeed have the equipment to do it). Realistically a shell failure is less likely but damaged valves/seals/threads more so. I've seen the aftermath of an explosion on a yacht due to leaking gas cylinders and I've no wish to see it again.

so what do you refill your 907`s from?

1715102692982.png

looking like £37.99 + The 15Kg Calor Butane bottle.

but that's effectively 6x refills?

1715103190100.png

++++++++++++++++

so were looking at £40 for the 15kg Calaor...

1715103333345.png

plus the 37.99 above for the kit to do it. . . round it up to £40,

that £40 + £40 = £80.

£80/15kg= £5.33 per Kg

Gotcha, so yours mentions both Butane and Propane stamped on the bottle.

3.0kg Butane.

And

2.5kg Propane?

Is that a 907 bottle?

....

Mine just shows the butane 2.95kg and 2.75kg on the other.

So I suppose a 2.5kg is a safe refill level.

I didn't really look into pressure vs temp.before, but it looks like the butane is fairly low pressure vs propane..... And possibly more suseptable to low temp pressure fade?

.

Yes it is a Campingaz bottle but like I said propane is only stamped on early bottles. Although it says 3kg you must allow room for expansion so thats why I think Campingaz only puts in 2.7kg. If I was going to refill a 907 with propane I would only put in 2.0-2.2kg at most. The below photo was taken at a german campsite I was on in August 2022 of two Campingaz 904 bottles. One was filled with butane and the other with propane. IMG_20220806_181105.jpg

Well, I've just been made feel like a criminal by the chap who works at the local tip. Taking another van load of old fence panels (in bits) and I thought I would try my luck and ask one of the guys if I could slip him a lady Godiva for an empty 907 cylinder with a cap, that was waving at me from within a compound. His answer was a resounding 'no' coupled with a vague threat of offering him a bribe wasn't a good idea for my own health!
0121 Do one. Or in this case 01922.
If anyone has an empty 907 going spare, I would be internally grateful!

get your missus to ask i always got a sorry mate "no can do" next day wife asks "yes luv how many do you want"

I'm thinking I have a calor 15kg bottle on the gas BBQ out back?

If I do then it's game on for the refill setup.

So im assuming the empty 907 goes on the floor with the full 15kg on a table, laying upside down,? (Higher up for gravity assisted liquid flow)

Upsidedown so the liquid is at the valve, the open the valves for a few seconds.

Then disconnect the 907 and weigh.

Then repeat as necessary?

The way I do it is to have the scales on the floor with the 907 on top. Take a note of the empty weight and add 2.7kg so that you get total weight that you need. When you get close to the target weight I turn off the gas. Double check your weight and if you go over just vent off to the desired weight in an OPEN space.

just carrying on from this. . .

and referencing @Perfectos level chart from above.

here my bottles and weights. . .

++++++++++++++++

my original bottle thats assumed running out - 4.1Kg - 15%

so i was right to look at getting a replacement . . . this wont last the next 4dayer.

1715153855907.png

+++

the new 907 from Go Outdoors yesterday - 6.0Kg = 85%

hmm, are they short filling me here?

i was expecting 6.4Kg as per the chart . . . but i cant find the original source of the picture,

its not on the Campingaz website that i can see. . . so assuming a margin of error.

1715153936848.png

+++

my other old 907, assumed empty - 3.8kg (without cap handle) = 2%

1715154002529.png

and a 904 i also have. . .

2.9kg = xx% ?
