AdBlue Discussion and Issues

Got the van back yesterday. Fault cleared and seems OK .
VW wittebrug have suggested that driving 50 miles in fourth or fifth gear at a constant speed might reset if the issue occurs , worth a try.....

Hi All,

I'm running a 26 month old T6 that now has 110k on the clock and it has been nothing but trouble from about 6 months old.

Have been to 2 different dealers and changed countless parts all connected to the adblue system at the start, until the second dealer finally gave up and told me that VW technical told them o rese the warning light and send me on my way.

I have now had the P20EE and P204F codes logged over 1500 times between them.

I have complained several times and all the way up to the executive office at VW and the best answer I get is that I should call VW Assist or take it to a dealer to reset the warning light, then carry on as it is a known fault which there is no fix for. It's so difficult as with the mileage the vehicle does the fault rears it's ugly head almost weekly.

Last Friday I had VW Assist out yet again, but this time maybe got somewhere.

The engineer said had seen this error a number of times and seems they now think it is caused by over filling the adblue tank.

He pumped some out of the tank as it was brimmed full, regenned the engine and purged the DPF. It's only been a few days but so far so good. His advice was to only add 5 litres when the range goes down to 1k miles, that way we can't overfill it.

Not an ideal fix but at least some light at the end of the tunnel.

@niallwatts . Have you been complying with the min max amounts displayed on the MFD.

Take a photo of your MFD making sure the mileage is indictated in the bottom left. Keep the receipt from the Adblue pump. Use this to show VW if you haven't been over filling.

If your van is like mine, then adding 10 litres when you have 1300 to 1500 miles range left should not be a problem.

However, from all the info on this forum, its critical to add an amount compliant with the min max display. It's also critical to turn on the ignition WITHOUT switching on the engine for 30 seconds after adding adblue.

It's all in the user manual.

Hi guys. First post and sad to say my van has had this fault come up again. I bought the van from Manchester van Centre in December 2017 and within 5 months it was at the VW dealers in Speke, Liverpool. 12 months ago the engine management light came on on my way to Bala, followed by the adblue warning 12 miles later. Over the next 2 weeks the adblue warning was on and off as and when it wanted before I got it to the dealers in Speke.
They had it twice before it was sorted but I'm going nowhere them again as they fed me a load of BS and were most unhelpful sorting a courtesy car.

Now after nearly 12 months of trouble free driving, I had the adblue down to 800 miles so put in the recommended amount and a week later I'm now sat with the engine management light on but the adblue warning light has gone off - after a 650 left mile warning.

I'm now booked into Manchester Van centre on 16th May to see if they can do owt with it.
I am going to ask what happens if this continues after the van is out of warranty as its obviously and ongoing problem.

Cheers

Redkite, you have my sympathy, i already know a couple of people who have had the adblue delete remap
it worries me when a vehicle is out of warranty and the Big bills that could follow
its a terrible system and i can see future adblue vehicles with problems on ebay with (spares or repairs) in the add

I intentionally did not top up my adblue before setting off on trip abroad as suspected it may have something to do with recurrent EML .
Range dropped suddenly from 3000 miles to 650 and would not recognise adding 7 litres of adblue.

Seem to recall there was a halt to production of the passenger carriers a while back, while they sorted an emissions issue. Guessing this may be the fix for the ones already sold and on the road.

Probably not possible to get an accurate comparison between the adblue consumption for different van's, due to different driving conditions. But it would be interesting to know what the difference is in consumption between a software updated van and a non updated. If you bought a new van with updated software, did they deduct the compensation offer from the price tag? I suspect not.

I will go tomorrow in vw for this sw update.. I live in Italy. I don't know if it is all the same for other country.
I have read on german T6 forum that there are a lot of people have done already the update in Germany.
Only thing is sure, the car adblue consumption will go up...

Picked up the van today and the explanation for the adblue issue was that the tiny leak found in the pipe was causing a pressure problem in the tank , so when the adblue pump pulsed to inject it the level in the tanks was not compensating so the gauge read a low reading and then could not reset hence the drop from 5000miles to 650 but no max min level showing. They had some very long conversations with VW tech but now say problem fixed ! we shall see, as mentioned earlier we have a number of long trips coming up over the next 6 months or so. As a precuation of have noted positions of VW dealers in Scotland!! Really hope this is a fix I only have 12 months warranty left!
Another trip to the west country and yet again on the return trip a 1000+ miles since the last report the ad blue warning came up again, as before the reading went from 5000 -to 650 miles back into the dealers on Friday. Getting a bit pissed off with this now!

Picked up the van this afternoon this time the problem was with the EGR its had a flush and now feels much better! The next few weeks will tell - Scotland here we come in a fortnight or so!

I have just spoken to my friendly VW roadside assist tech. He advised me of this 'fix' as I have an outstanding issue with my van. He showed the the letter and documentation that is going to be sent out to customers. The fix ran for about 7 days in the UK before they stopped it. He said this is not unusual as they often try it on a few vehicles before rolling it out to everyone else.
He mentioned about the 'free' adblu also.
Guess I'll need to bite the bullet on this one.

It also helps with stalling, apparently.

The adblue warning has come on,how much do i put in it?. First time I've had to top it up and dont wanna cock it up!.IMG_20190524_180507.jpg

As per the read out put in 10 litres - after filling switch on the ignition leave for 30 secs then start the engine new adblue level should then register Ok BUT make sure you do not overfill!
