AdBlue Discussion and Issues

This just appeared on mine today - is it safe to drive?

I’m wondering if 600 miles in 16 months as a demonstrator hasnt helped - done 5500 since purchase in Oct 19.

I put 10L of adblue in last week (dash said 1.75 to 2.5g) so wondering if related?

Mine appeared over the weekend when I went to fill up, only had it since Wednesday!

1 Yr old, 102, 11k miles, just been converted.

VW Assist came and had a look, told me to take it in, so off to Liverpool this Weds. Must say I'm impressed with the VW Assistance package.

I know there was a recall on some of the 102s to do with the egr was a update and replace but that was on a 2016 just a thought I'd put out there ...

Hmm - date stamps everywhere on the van show it was made q3 2016 but registered 2018. It has adblue so not a really early T6

Booked in for 26th but said to drop it off now - if they can pull it in they will!

I’ll report back!!

I just had this joy today.

500 miles left to go, seen there were a load of threads on adblue but figured what’s the big deal so didn’t bother to read them! Went with the old school mentality of fit as much as you can in so you can leave it as long as possible before doing it again!

Clearly that didn’t work too well so had to syphon some out, and it doesn’t taste great!

Took 15L in the end, after the syphoning (said It needed 2.75-3.25 gallons). 6500 miles till next time!

Filled mine to the exact level but has not reset. Garage says there’s 13 L in the tank. Driven it 50 miles. still no reset???

I did mine recently. I put in the amount that the trip computer asked for, after changing the units to metric to make it easier to measure. Once filled, turned on the ignition, and within a few seconds the display went from 600 miles to 6500 miles. I left the ignition on for a little longer before turning it off. The van has driven faultlessly since.

Mine did this twice yesterday!

The day before it asked for between 0.75gal and 1.5gal. Put in 6.6L which is 1.45gal.

Went up to 5500 miles. Did 250 miles yesterday, all good. About 260 miles in, displayed 5000 miles which was ok, as it’d readjusted. Then the engine light. Checked Carista - and it’s Adblue reductant performance. Cancelled that. A few miles later, BEEP - DEF error, no restart in 650 miles. 20 or 30 miles on, all is well, and we’re back up to 5000 miles.:D

Parked up 5 miles from home for 20 mins, and set off again - BEEP DEF Error, no restart in 650 miles.

After 6 hours driving I was tired, but was so annoyed I whipped it up some ramps and pulled out the Adblue injector to have a look at it as I heard they’re prone to clogging. It was a little crusty so I cleaned it and put it back.

Went and did another 50 miles or so, and it cleared, and I’ve done another 20 or so since then.

I used a brand new bottle of Adblue and one that had been opened and partially used. I wonder whether it had ‘gone off’ or crystallised or something. Can’t be sure though.

I’ve bought a 12v liquid transfer pump so if it does it again, I’m gonna pull all the Adblue and put fresh stuff

Call me a pessimist but I put copper grease on the thread for the injector.

Stupid bloody system.

I wonder if it is the adblue crystallizing on the level sensor giving spurious reading. Deposit gets washed off with further agitating of the adblue.

It’s odd isn’t it? I only thought afterwards about the crystals as there were some crusty bits around the mouth of the bottle.

When I catched this fault on mine, the level sensor reading was just normal.

Mine did this twice yesterday!
Have you got the ECU updated (between Jan-2019 and today)? That should have been cure for false alarms. Could you please post Detailed ECU info from Carista - just the engine section?

However, there seems to be some indications that the update wasn't cure for everyone.

Thanks for the note. No update for me as yet. I’ll see how this goes and maybe investigate the update. Not had any issues (apart from one overfilling issue - ;)) in 14k though.

Manufacturers blurb on an adblue tank sensor ( leads me to think that it could take only one small crystal on the sensor tip to throw the measurement out):

The primary component of SST’s optical level switch is a polymer or glass sensor tip that houses an infrared (IR) light source and an optical detector. The sensor utilizes the principle that infrared light is refracted out of the sensor tip when in a liquid, instead of reflected back into the optical detector when in air.

The sensor is solid-state with no moving parts. It is compact, protruding a small distance into the application, and capable of detecting the smallest amounts of fluid in a tank for high reliability. The digital switch includes a configurable microcontroller with alarm relay capabilities that processes the input from the sensor.

Finally, the switch is capable of surviving harsh liquid media and a wide range of operating temperatures.
