AdBlue Discussion and Issues

Currently sitting in the stealers getting adblue tank drained. Had 650mile warning so topped up from a garage filler, stupidly not paying attention and overfilled. Jumped back in and still showed 650miles and then engine block warning came on. Overfill at the peril of your wallet getting cleaned out by your local garage, it was not cheap - hard lesson to learn.

Whisper it quietly but we have just completed a 3 week 2200 mile trip up to and around Northumbria & Scotland and happy to say the van didn't miss a beat. No adblue issues and great economy from some very mixed driving ![/QUOTE
On our way to Norfolk on Sunday and the adblue went from 5000 miles remaining to 650 (again) this time I called VW assist, AA man arrived no disrespect but had very little idea topped up adblue (2.5litres!) no change to read out. We decided to carry on and 5 miles down the road it changed to 600 mile range and then a few minutes later it suddenly displayed 6000 miles! Have since got home a round trip of 400+ plus miles and its still showing 6000. Interesting but what a rubbish system it is! VW really need to get a grip on it.

I’ve just recently got a T6 but my previous car was a Ford Galaxy 2.0 TDCi. That car suffered with an EGR that was prone to clogging, particularly on very long runs, such as a summer holiday motorway run of 6+hrs solid driving, nearly always with the P0401 DTC. I tried some fuel additives, only buying premium diesel etc. but none made any difference. Eventually I spent £600 replacing the EGR only for it to clog 3 weeks later, I was beyond angry by this point.

Out of desperation I asked for the oil level to be reduced on the car, because something was contaminating the valve. This seemed to solve the problem and the EGR problems went away. I had an oil change on the car and they filled the oil to the top marker (against my instruction), and the problem came back. Reduced the oil level and the problem went away. I never understood how the two things could be connected, whether some engine oil was pushing through the turbo bearings, or coming up through the crank breather or something.

I know it was a Ford/Peugeot CSA engine and not a VW but the engine principles are similar. If I ever find the EGR clogging on my T6 the very first thing I will do is to reduce the oil level.

@Thegee6 For info, I have found that the VW filler doesn’t fit all adblue containers. Consequently, I initially bought a ten litre pack from my local VW dealer (surprisingly at minimal cost difference to Halfords, etc) and planned to decant any other adblue bought subsequently into this once empty. However, as I seem to only top up once a year I have stuck with VW.

Good info, thanks. I was just about to buy a VW filler tube but wondered if it would fit other forecourt containers. You have answered my question nicely!

thanks for the info.

I will try it on the Adblue container I have in the garage and see if the filler fits it. If not then will get a VW container of Adblue

As already mentioned a couple of times above , I filled mine at Shell @ Winnal Winchester, but most garages that cater for trucks will have a pump - I paid £0.73 ltr and put in 10ltr as that was within the lower and upper amounts as per my MFD display.

Has anyone had a van that’s been fixed?

I’ve had mine 4 1/2 months now and will be going back in this week for the third time for another P20EE fault .
1st time I was told it required the AdBlue update (it was a March 2017 van with 64K on it???)
2nd time and around 1000 miles since update, P20EE and P204F faults up. NOX sensor changed.
3rd time (today) 3000 miles since update P20EE up again!

Yes , mine is fixed !
Emissions light 5 times during first 11k from New , also adblue range fault and not registering filling up which left me stuck abroad .
Software update about 10 k ago and no issues since.

My van was an April 17 102ps van. I’ve had numerous adblu issues. New NOX sensor, software update, recalibration, you name it.
However, it’s been good for the last 3 months or so. The warranty runs out in a month!

question is what is going to happen when these vans are out of warranty and 5+ years old
has anyone had to pay yet?
adblu is just another headache for the the tdi driver

Has anyone had the adblue disabled ? I gather its illegal, but would be difficult to enforce, and the environmental effect little different to re mapping.
