Hi all, will I need spacers if I fit grabber at3 235/65 r17 on Davenport's, standard ride height? Thanks ( sick of the lack of grip on conti vans)

This is a big tyre 25mm all round increase in size; 7.5% increase in gearing.
You may just about get away with it, if you travel lightly loaded, and the terrain you travel is not too undulating; and you don't drive too fast.
The worst case is on full lock; or heavy compression you start to rub the plastic liners. You may just rub on the inner metal on full lock, but you can always "unlock" the wheel slightly to stop this.
To minimise the likelihood of never catching the plastic liners/ inner metal, fit 25mm spacers all round.

Evening Bud,
Im not 100% sure if anyone has a mathematical formula that would work your question out but i have run both 235/55/18 and 235/60/18 AT3's. All standard ride height and all turned and compressed with no scrubbing at all.
Sorry i cant answer the question fully.

Hi Chris. I have read the whole thread. Earlier in it you recommend 225/65 r17 but here say that 235/65 r17 are pushing it. Surely they both have the same rolling radius, with the 235 just being wider. The gearing ratio would be the same wouldn't it?

Some of the discussion sounds like the tyre is only just clearing the arch. My experience of driving slow on wet muddy grass is that the tyre will quickly cake up and get significantly bigger running the risk of doing damage to the arch.

There is a difference in rolling diameter between these two options, I’m running 225/65 R17 as the gearing was less affected, around 4% compared to 7% if I recall and the spare fits in the spare wheel well and the 235/65 doesn’t

A quick check on a tire diameter site will confirm the numbers

I’m happy with my BFG Ko2s, i did notice on the sidewalls that these 225 are not suitable for 7.5inch rims

The 65 is the aspect ratio of the tyre expressed as a %. So to work out the amount of side wall rubber you have you do this:
65/100 * 235= 152mm of side wall rubber;
65/100 * 225= 146.25mm of side wall rubber.
only 6mm difference but that is a significant difference to gearing, and the likelihood of the tyre catching, particularly if you are lowered or carry heavy loads.
I have run tyres the same size (rolling radius) as 235/65/17 (255/55/18's), and it was just a tad too much imo. But they looked brilliant :), just my opinion, and I'm sure there are people on here happy with this large size; particularly people with a suspension lift or Air.

Thanks, now it makes sense.

Next and final question.

Yoko geolander ATS Vs ko2 in size 225/65 r17
Yoko are speed and weight rated, have used them before on my last van, an lt35 158. They did 25,000 miles without any noticeable wear and also let me.drive through an ice storm.
Have not used the bfg ko2 tyre before, and it does work out as £200more fitted.

Are you OK with 102 load rating i.e not a T32?

If so, my choice would be

Tyre Pirelli 225/65 R17 102H RBL, 3PMSF | Scorpion A/T+ | TyreLeader.co.uk

we run them on our Amarok (bigger size), wonderful AT tyre. Oh and winter/all season rated; the other two tyres are summers.

..... in size 215 / 65r16 it seems to me there are no AT tires with load code and speed for the T32 ..... right?
