Are EVs the way forward?

They moaned they were a bit sluggish and cost too much in petrol.
And outlier I will fully accept but… Try a Mercedes C300de (W205).

Range on electric was really not great (but enough not to need ICE if it’s not a long enough trip to get everything up to proper temp).
The boot was compromised due to the battery pack and never being designed to be a hybrid (Merc hastily added it to the range to fit a market demand).
But that haste to market… boy it made it fun…
It had 700Nm of torque on paper, but often tested with more. It could light the tyres in 3rd gear with driving aids turned off and a heavy foot (I was going through a pair of tyres every 6 months).
It would often embarrass much “faster“ and more expensive cars from the same brand or other Stuttgart brands.
A genuine hooligan in sheep’s clothes.

Unfortunately Mercedes neutered the current version and it’s significantly tamer, slower and a lot less fun at the expense of being a proper hybrid with good range,

Just been sent this.
Never heard anything about this before
I’ve not checked to see if it’s legit.

Porsche tried very hard looking to get what they called eFuels working - they partnered with a few big companies including ExxonMobil. Essentially they wanted biofuels that would work in the 1.3bn ICE vehicles on the road today (well, that’s what they said but really they want to just keep making fast ICE cars as it’s cheaper and easy to stay as is rather than retooling and going to another propulsion system on a large scale).
Their biofuel works but a) it takes energy to make it… they want it to be as near to carbon neutral as possible so that means using a proportion of clean energy to make a fuel to burn rather than just using clean energy to charge a battery and b) the sheer amount of land they would need to grow crops to get it to scale would mean humans can’t grow enough food. Dare say their crop harvest would be competing with their solar farms too. You may even need serious deforestation to help grow the soya or whatever rip you use.
It basically adds in two to three extra layers that EVs do away with and you’re still burning fuel and producing emissions at the point of use as well as still having to transport liquid around the world (1m3 is generally around 1t).

Meanwhile the handbook for my mk7 golf says the engine can’t take biofuels with a certain percentage of ethanol.

People will grasp onto them as they seem plausible until you realise the pitfalls.

"Are EV's the way forward?"
Not as far as Europe are concerned if this is to be believed.

Although Germany's population isn't much bigger than ours and they too also have over a million on their roads already.

The EU also have a 2035 sales ban on ice cars, so whether ze Germans like it or not today jn 2024 it's still their future.

This bloke has a right downer on EVs just like that Australian herbert John Cadogan, both on a constant clickbait search with videos designed to sensationalise and gain hits.
I watch Electric Classic Cars, Electric Vehicle Man and Fully Charged, with EVM like FC being concerned with all things free electric orientated rather than just cars.
If I can manage a link or two but probably not

I’m amazed Geoff sells propaganda/geoff buys cars has taken so long to appear! The man is exhausting with a constant barrage of anti ev rhetoric destabilising the car market and spreading fear. In a way he has helped me as I would never have been able to afford one but I definitely feel for the first owners that have lost a fortune thanks in part to people like him.

I despise the bloke (Geoff pretends to be a car dealer) but did give him one click once to see if it was a send up video, this was after the Luton Airport car fire.
I save my strongest bile for that Australian gobshite Cadogan who like Geoff likes to provoke but in his case hasn't even got skin in the game as they don't make their own cars so will eventually end up buying new Chinese EVs anyway if that's all that's available to them.

Getting a bit cocky after managing those last two YT links and apologies for posting yet another reply but it's this or carrying on mopping the coal cellar dry after yesterday's epic 100mm of rain... we're on an hill too!
Anyway I watch Salvage Rebuilds UK too on YT and they've bought a couple of hybrids and a BMW i3S and don't seem to be fazed by those fat orange cables.

If you can stomach the depreciation, the I3S is an amazing little machine !
Used prices are a real bargain, if it suits your needs.

Don't know if any EV owners are concerned about the ability for the manufacturer, to disable their car remotely at any time. Elon Musk just did that to a Russian Tesla Cyber truck.
If that is the way of the future....beware.
Personally, I prefer to have complete control of my vehicle...and my life.
In theory they could remotely brick ICE cars too by immobilising them too. More and more modern ICE cars are ‘connected’ and that feature will be fitted to newer models too. Sure, they can’t brick an old ICE car but then we aren’t comparing apples with apples.

These connected cars (whether EV or ICE) also have the ability to track you, eavesdrop on you and to check data about driving styles etc - the latter can be used to argue on warranty issues.

Not saying they do all use the trackers/microphone etc. for nefarious acts (some users on YouTube are, of course) but it’s all technically possible and in no way depends on what power plant is fitted to the car.

People weren’t told Samsung were listening to them 24/7 via their ‘smart’ televisions. Yet when people were told not many seemed to care. It’s where we are these days.

Much easier than freezing people's bank accounts if you don't like their views, surely that could never happen in a democracy?

Just wait until CBDC central bank digital currency is fully implemented in the UK
No cash society
Oh and the personal carbon footprint tracker that’s being developed
Along with personal ID cards for use with face recognition.

All of course for our benefit

If you shut it down properly they are safe to work on. You just have to be more aware of jacking it up correctly because if you do it wrong, you end up looking like marv from home alone 2.

I've seen a few positive mentions of ID3 on here but nothing about ID4. Is it just one better? Is it a dog? Thoughts please gentlefolk!
Friends had one for a couple of years and loved it. So much so they swapped for a near identical one when the PCP came to an end 6 months ago. Was a no brainer as the payments went down to get in a brand new car. I’ve been in it a few times and must say I was rather impressed. Smooth, quiet and refined. The head unit seemed a little slow but that is an issue with all EV VWs over the last few years.

Having owned a superb T5.1 from 2011-2016 and now my current T6 from 2016 onwards ill never touch another diesel again.
This T6 has been absolutely hateful. Thirsty, incredibly unreliable for the first 5 years of its life and sooo slow despite 190bhp.

I do think EVs are the way forward. Seen in comming since my vehicle design days at uni back in 2007.
Battery tech is rapidly evolving. High density solid state batteries will be with us by the end of the decade. A 100kwh battery will be closer to 300kg rather than 700kg in the currently tech. Nio already making advancements and actually in production and in use in China.

Should have my Transit MSRT EV delivered next month. No more slowness, unreliability (hopefully) and considerably cheaper running costs.

Currently I don't think I could replace my 2 personal cars with EVs however. A Honda S660 that weights 830kg and a 660cc 3 pot screamer or my other 1996 Honda Prelude Type S with 280bhp NA. For daily drivers and certain commercial vehicles, EVs make sense and so much better to drive than ICE cars.

If you actually look at the science this whole movement towards reducing our CO2 levels just doesn’t add up.
If you look at the UKs whole CO2’s output and compare that to the amount of CO2 given off by a volcano naturally it becomes apparent our CO2 output is inconsequential.
These many active volcanos have been spewing out CO2 for a millennia.
But of course we’ve ruined the earth in 150 years by burning coal ?
CO2 levels are not the only reason for moving away from ICE powered vehicles. Particulates in the atmosphere are very damaging to health, especially in urban areas, causing cancer and other respiratory issues.. Petroleum (and Hydrogen) are very inefficient sources of energy and using fossil fuels is diminishing a limited resource.

Not to mention the fact that humans are responsible for 60 times the carbon emissions annually of volcanic activity...

The link is from NOAA, who arguably know more about the subject of anthropomorphic climate change than any other organisation ion the planet. The assertion that volcanoes are the villain here is simply apocryphal.
