looks like the original 70A MOL battery to me,


might be worth getting it tested.

or take it to Halfords et for a test.

Protyre near you do a free battery check. Just be prepared for them to try and sell you one but there's no obligation.

Mine does the same thing even after a new battery. There's no rhyme or rhythm to when it wants to do it. Be fine for 50 starts then just turns over for a few seconds. Thinking it could be a sticking egr or fuel return valve that's on its way out.

Had a similar issue and after Vw assist had a look… a new control module on glow plug no.3 was replaced under warranty… no issues since

Sorry for the delay - had the battery checked by Halfords and the reading was 161% turns out I have a super battery!! I’m assuming there must be something going on with the wiring of the professional conversion - maybe the leisure battery is juicing the starter battery? I don’t know, I’m not clever enough for that.

However with that reading are we happy the starter battery is good? That then leads me to the glow plugs - question, is it possible to get them checked before they are replaced? I mean if they are all good I don’t want to fork out money to get them replaced. I’ve found a reputable garage who specialises in glow plugs, but still worried about any of them snapping.

Honestly I've no idea what "161%" means here... it might just mean whoever tested it Halfords doesn't have a clue.

With electrical weirdness once you've eliminated the obvious it's always a good idea to consider starting from a known good battery before spending serious money or taking things to bits. Counting against yours is that it's a MOLL (which have a known bad history) and potentially 7 years old.

If you spend £50 on a battery tester keep in mind the new battery will be about £150

Honestly I'd just get a fresh battery and eliminate it as a possibility especially if yours is long in the tooth. It's not much more than filling the tank up in the grand scheme of things.

You make a really good point to be fair - do you know if there’s anywhere online that will give you the correct battery if you put in the van details? Sorry, I’m terrible with stuff like this, can drive the van, sleep in the van and that’s about it haha

Read somewhere you need to code in a new battery when fitted via a Carista dongle - is there any truth in that do you know? TIA

If your van is start stop then strictly speaking yes the BCM needs to be updated at least to reset the health data and, if you change size, the capacity.

If you swap like for like then the usual trick is just to change one number in the battery serial number so it knows it's new.

However it should adapt over 10-15 charge cycles if you don't. It's not going to do anything critical, it just might not charge optimally and enable start stop until it's happy.

Jumping onto this thread, I have a 2019 T6 with the same engine, and I have a similar issue when starting first thing in the morning or after work

. I recorded this start up a few weeks back, but today for the second time, when I went to start, it started and was turning over at the same time, I turned it off and then it started normal. a very strange experience I've never seen in any vehicle. Any ideas what this could be?

Just updating this thread - I replaced the battery and unfortunately it hasn’t resolved the problem. Next on the list is to get the glow plugs looked at. Will update soon.
